Great Grantham News
This is my second "Great Grantham News" article and so I want to highlight the town that I call home, more specifically one of the Town’s most famous landmarks, St Wulfram’s Church.
St Wulfram's Church is a stunning medieval church located right in the heart of Grantham and dates back to the 7th century and has stood to watch over the town and its community for centuries. The Church's most striking feature is its impressive spire, which stands at over 86 meters (283 ft) tall and is still to this day one of the tallest in the whole country.
Another unique feature of the Church is the array of medieval carvings, which adorn the exterior of the Church depicting a variety of subjects, including mythical creatures, saints and scenes from the Bible. Inside the Church, the stained glass windows date back to the 14th and 15th centuries.
St. Wulfram's has played an important role in the history of Grantham over the centuries. During the English Civil War between 1642 to 1651, it was used as a barracks by Royalist Forces with the spire being used as a superb lookout post.
To this day, St Wulfram’s remains an active church and a vital community asset for the town playing host to a number of events throughout the year including concerts, the Grantham Christmas Tree Festival, host to countless community groups and of course the annual Grantham Beer Festival.
If you're in town during a break from the office, shopping or out for a walk this coming weekend, why not take a few minutes to walk around the Church grounds and take in the impressive architecture and maybe you’ll even catch a glimpse of the Peregrine Falcons that call the spire their home!
