Great expectations!

Great expectations!

It happens in life all the time. It happens to all of us. People want attention, recognition, importance & rewards, for their potential, before they deliver/perform & before it is due I.e. it is their ‘genuine’ sense of entitlement, rightly or wrongly. We see this, from freshmen upwards & all the way to the top, in any organisation

Life is & always seems a bit unfair or let us say, it is more fair to others, among one’s peer group

In my experience, patience pays off, in the long run. However this journey is riddled with self-doubt, among others, leading to cynicism. This is where coaches/mentors & their sane advice needs to prevail & self reflection becomes important

Here is an outline of a simple test of performance/contribution for self reflection. First write down & then rate one’s own performance

Writing down:

  • Paper, pencil/pen & some quiet are the best tools to accomplish this
  • List one’s performance goals, self or given by the organisation, & then write down one’s performance/accomplishments against each one

Rating: (use any appropriate scale)

  • Rate/assess self satisfaction of achievement against each one
  • Rate/assess your achievement against your organisational need, as a percentage of requirement/need
  • Be honest. Do not change goals, to suit your level of performance
  • Do not invent excuses
  • Now assess the performance to reward ratio
  • Rethink about your original position/stance
  • Tip: Do not compare
  • Repeat. Do not compare
  • Trust yourself
  • Do not complain

Now, if one is serious, one can chart one’s path to high performance, a course correction towards achievement, if you like, provided one truly has both, ‘skill & will’ to do so

Note:

In a behavioural survey conducted by the US Navy, it was found that over 90% of people overestimated their capability/ies to perform. Their intent to perform was never in question! Nobody wants to be a failure. Same is true in business organisations & startups

My take:

  • Performance trumps talk, anyday
  • Talk is cheap
  • Effort is just effort. Nothing more
  • Doers are priceless
  • Finishers, almost always, lead
