Great expectations

Ah, the new year—a time of resolutions, ambitions, expectations and grand ideas.

I know, it is a late entry.

You've finally mastered the art of adulting, only to discover that expectations are as reliable as New Year's resolutions: promising in theory but often abandoned by February.

How frequently do we surrender to our rampant expectations, our minds weaving extravagant future scenarios?

Us human types are drawn to setting impossibly high expectations, dreaming of monumental achievements and romantic outcomes. Yet, reality crashes like a deflating party balloon, zig-zagging to its demise.

Much like the gold prospectors of the mid-1800s swarming the California Gold Rush, envisioning instant wealth. Alas, reality served them gruelling work, treacherous terrain, slim chances, and a hearty dose of disillusionment.

Reality often revels in a mocking belly-aching howl.

Expectations of yourself are often too lofty, misplaced, mismanaged, and beyond your capabilities. Like busting out your breakdancing bravado at a family reunion—it might impress a few, but it inevitably leads to embarrassment or injury.

Pause and ponder—are your expectations grounded, or are you hurtling towards heartbreak? Put on your oxygen tank, delve into your depths and acknowledge your true capabilities.

In this ceaseless climb of personal development, each step is a triumph, not a defeat. Expectations should be guideposts, not hurdles.

Yes, set goals and aim high, but be kind to yourself. You can't conquer everything. Focus where your impact is most profound.

After all, you're the CEO of your expectations.

Here's to a year of dry humour and attainable ambitions.

But enough expectations for one day; there are jobs to be done.
