A Great Equalizer: Why storytelling is an advantage for non-native speakers

A Great Equalizer: Why storytelling is an advantage for non-native speakers

I have a powerful realization.

That comes a few months after starting my leadership storytelling journey...

My realization:

You do not have to be a native English speaker to be an effective storyteller.

Let that sink in for a moment.

Surprised? Most people are.

Shocked? Possibly.

Here's the harsh reality: More than 70% of my non-native English-speaking clients lacked confidence when communicating in public.

??They have crippling anxiety.

??Some become tense.

??Others get dizzy.

??Their heart beats quickly.

??Pronunciation and enunciation suffer.

It doesn't have to be this way...

My 10 years in leadership storytelling have shown me that this superpower is a great equalizer for non-native speakers.

The reason is simple. Keep reading...

Never sacrifice the simplicity of your message

Storytelling is a powerful tool for non-native speakers because:

??It enables you to simplify complex thoughts.

??It effectively builds an emotional connection with the audience.

? It follows a clear structure so the audience follows along.

Storytelling is not about using fancy, complicated language.

It's about connection.

Simple storytelling is effective and reduces the learning curve for non-native speakers.

I share these tips with non-native-speaking clients:

1?? Simplify complex thoughts down to concise soundbites (8 seconds).

Example: As a young boy, David does not want to grow up and become a professional athlete. He dreams that one day he will become the first teenage astronaut and travel to outer space.

? David dreams of being the first teenage astronaut in outer space.

2?? Elevate the impact of your words with vocal variety (speed, emotion, volume, etc).

Example: Speaking fast when you want to showcase events happening quickly.

3?? Connect specific words to your emotions/feelings through body language (facial expressions, gestures, posture, etc).

Example: Looking down or frowning to express sadness.
