The Great Debate: Team or Group?

The Great Debate: Team or Group?

Hey LEO family,

Do you ever wonder whether you're in a group or on a team?

Spoiler alert: they're not the same! Let's break it down in a fun way.

Leader of the Pack vs. Team Captain: In a group, there's usually one superhero leader, cape and all, calling the shots. In a team, everyone gets a chance to wear the cape! It's like having the Avengers instead of Superman flying solo. Is there only one person on a squad?

Solo Missions vs. Group Quests: Picture this: in a group, it's every person for themselves, like playing single-player mode in a game. In a team, it's multiplayer mode, where everyone's victory dance is synced! I really like to use an activity I learned a few years ago called, "The Tower Exercise." Essentially, each team has to work towards building the highest tower. I have never seen one person build the highest tower in the allotted time. It takes on team members to be the winner in this activity.

The Big Picture vs. Puzzle Pieces: Groups focus on a grand mission, like planning an intergalactic trip. Teams? They zoom in on the nitty-gritty, like who's bringing snacks for the journey.

Meeting Mayhem: Group meetings? Structured, efficient, with a clear agenda - like a well-rehearsed Broadway show. Team meetings? More like improv comedy, where everyone throws in ideas and it somehow works!

High Fives vs. Group Hugs: Groups delegate tasks like a well-oiled machine. Teams? They're more about group effort, like a tug-of-war team pulling the rope together.

So, are you in a group thinking it's a team, or in a team feeling like it's a group? Remember, both have their perks, but knowing the difference can make your work life feel more like a party and less like a solo concert.

Throughout your shifts, whether in the field or in the admin building, groups and teams are everywhere. If the "job" is getting too stressful, remember there is a team out there for you. It may not be easily recognizable but looking deeply and consistently will allow you to flourish in ways that solo acts cannot do.

In my book, Greatness Beyond the Badge, I have a chapter on "Teams". Take a look at it and see which principles you can use today.

Be safe,

Michael
