Great Day @ Naples Shipping Week!

Today I’ve had the opportunity to be an ABB speaker at the Green Shipping Summit of the Naples Shipping Week.
I’ve presented the ABB Shore-to-Ship Power solution as part of Smart Port concept. Also in ports, indeed, the traditional power grid is evolving into Smart Grid. A Smart Port is a port that, with the aim of increasing competitiveness, efficiency and environmental compatibility, under the pressure of new demand (on-shore and off-shore electric mobility, shore-to-ship power) and with the necessity to integrate intermittent renewables, is equipped with a Smart Grid in order to ensure the energy balance between demand and supply.
ABB offers an unrivaled combination of products, services and solution that make it the ideal partner for the transition to the Smart Port paradigm. In fact, thanks to its vast and consolidated portfolio, ABB can supply products, solutions and services for Port Electrification (electric cranes, distribution SS, HV transformation SS), grid integration of renewables, Terminal Automation, EV, E -Bus and Shore-to-Ship Power.
The ships at berth keeps engines running to produce the electricity needed for the on-board systems. A cruise ship at berth produces CO2 emissions equivalent to 2,500 cars. More than 100.000 vessels at berth in 4,500 ports worldwide, produce about 900 million tonnes of CO2, NOx, SOx and PPM, equivalent to the emissions of 220 coal power plants.
If you think that in countries like Italy, ports are very often "embedded" into the cities, it’s clear that a port is an economic opportunity but also a serious environmental threat. ABB's Shore-to-Ship Power is the solution to this problem. Thanks to this technology, indeed, it is possible to power the electric systems of a ship at berth with on-shore electricity, and then to turn off the engines.
Unlike other competing technologies, the Shore-to-Ship Power is the only solution that allows the total eradication of all emissions: atmospheric, noise and vibrations. Shore-to-Ship Power can thus provide a very important contribution in the evolution towards the Smart Port paradigm, helping to transform the port from a mere transit point of people and goods to an attractive commercial and tourist center.
