What are the Barriers and Obstacles Preventing the PA Framework? By Gary Cokins
In this article, Gary discusses why organizations often struggle to adopt advanced management accounting methods, such as those in the PACE Analytics Framework (PA Framework) and enterprise/corporate performance management (EPM/CPM).
These methods include techniques like:
?? Activity-based costing (ABC),
?? Strategy management,
?? Lean management,
?? Quality management,
?? Driver-based budgeting,
?? Scenario analysis,
?? Risk management, and
?? Analytics.
Despite their benefits for enhancing organizational competitiveness, many CFOs and accountants remain fixated on traditional financial reporting, which leads to inaccuracies and missed opportunities for improvement.
The resistance to these methods stems from both "excuses" and "barriers."
Excuses include:
?? Contentment with current profitability,
?? Reliance on general ledger systems,
?? Skepticism about new methods, and
?? Perceived complexity.
Barriers involve issues like:
?? Poor data quality,
?? Resistance to change,
?? Complexity fears, and
?? Misalignment of incentives.
Specific to ABC, misconceptions about complexity, effort, and the need for time sheets deter its adoption.
There is a call for CFOs to provide more accurate and insightful financial information, aligning internal management accounting with contemporary practices to support better decision-making.
