MothNet: Shedding light on the night

Shedding Light on the Night: Nocturnal Biodiversity in the Otago Region will give students and communities from across Otago the tools to engage with the exciting world of moth trapping along with access to the best Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies) experts in New Zealand.

What is the aim of this project?

This project aims to improve public engagement with moths and in doing so improve our understanding of the ecology and geographical distribution of our New Zealand species. Using standardised light trapping methods we will address two related questions:

1. What is the distribution and ecology of moths in the Otago region?
2. How does artificial lighting influence moth species richness and relative species abundances within the Otago Region?
