In the past few years, the United Kingdom has witnessed a worrying trend: a significant and accelerating exodus of millionaires, entrepreneurs, and business owners. This isn't just a statistical anomaly; it's a clarion call signalling deeper issues within our nation's economic policies.
Consider these staggering numbers:
Research suggests that 9,500 millionaires will leave the UK this year, more than double the 4,200 who left the UK last year.
What is driving this mass departure? The recent changes implemented by the government—specifically, the increase in Capital Gains Tax and the elimination of Entrepreneurs' Relief—have made the UK a less hospitable environment for those who drive innovation and economic growth.
Entrepreneurs' Relief? Gone.
Once a cornerstone policy that encouraged enterprise by reducing the tax burden on business owners selling their companies, Entrepreneurs' Relief to be removed. This change not only affects the personal finances of entrepreneurs but also sends a discouraging message to those considering starting or investing in UK businesses.
Capital Gains Tax? Increasing.
The hike in Capital Gains Tax means that individuals are now paying more when they sell assets like shares, property, or businesses. For entrepreneurs and investors, this reduces the potential returns on their hard work and risks taken, making other countries with more favourable tax regimes increasingly attractive.

1 个月Patrick. A good article despite some of the changes are a week early ??. I too am thinking of leaving the country and made positive moves to examine where and how. However for many entrepreneurs it’s not the tax regime that makes the choice, it’s the environment. Business owners when they have made their first ￡ms reinvest because they have the bug, not to generate more cash but to help others and try new ideas. For me, that will disappear because the environment in the UK is not conducive to that anymore so people will take their proceeds from sale and simply retire or spend it. That is the biggest impact for me, the country has no customer service, has no attitude about hard work rewards success ( and it does) and the entitlement culture of the many paid for by the few. Very sad but we are being driven out of the country but at least we have a choice !!
