A breakthrough have been made in English morpheme, benefiting most of the world's population for generations
----A letter to English professors, teachers and students at home and abroad
First of all, all the contents of the article only represent my personal views. Secondly, this paper does not intend to challenge the authority of English experts, the views in this paper are for reference only.
一、 Purpose of the letter
This holiday, I saw a lot of training advertisements and training methods for memorizing words on Wechat or other media. I feel it is necessary to talk about my views on word research and word memory.
After 30 years of painstaking research, I boldly put forward specific standard for English morpheme, successfully solved the embarrassment that English morpheme has only abstract concepts but no specific standard for several centuries, making the study of words a great step forward. It is strongly recommended that English teachers should teach word memory according to my breakthrough direction, so that "words and morphemes" can become a basic course in middle school or university, so that students can know the basic formation principle of words, so as to benefit the students of English learning all over the world. Let them no longer spend a lot of time and energy on memorizing words, and let their parents no longer spend a lot of money on those unscientific word memory methods. If it can be so, I am relieved.
My research is not innovative. It is just a puzzle left by a group of romantic western language workers more than 3000 years ago, which was perfectly solved by an oriental surgeon full of wisdom and enthusiasm for 30 years. This is a typical case of a long-term paradox in the history of human education: "liberal arts students fear logic, science students fear illogicality".
二、 Breakthrough point of morpheme theory
Morphemes are not exactly defined in different large English dictionaries and research papers. I support the view that morphemes are the smallest morphological unit with semantics. However, it is not clear what is the minimum morphological unit. For example, whether word bring is a morpheme is difficult for experts to answer. If they say yes, it violates the abstract concept of morpheme. If they say no, they can't find the theoretical basis. Therefore, the traditional concept of morpheme is relatively abstract, which is not conducive to today's vocabulary research and memory.
On the basis of following the abstract concept of morpheme, through the comparative analysis of more than 30000 public English words (including GRE words), I set specific standards for this smallest morphological unit, and thus put forward a new concept of "morpheme standard", so that people can analyze the word components with a unified standard. This standard solves many contradictions in previous morpheme research, and is very helpful to the study of morphology, semantics and memory of vocabulary, and brings a lot of practical new topics to the English world. As English belongs to a branch of Indo European language family and integrates many words from other branches, the morpheme standard can be applied to the study and memory of all Indo European language words, which lays a solid theoretical foundation for the unification of Indo European languages.
In morphology, according to this criterion, a large number of morpheme level roots and suffixes can be generated. New roots connect some seemingly unrelated words organically to form the same family words. The new suffixes improve the suffix sequence and make the memory of suffixes simple and clear. For example, in the word bacteria, the dictionary points out the meaning of bacteri- and the suffix -a, but does not indicate whether bacteri- can be further subdivided. What do the subdivided components -bac-, -eri and -t mean? The morpheme standard answers these questions well. Some people may think that such subdivision is unnecessary. That's a big mistake. Once the meaning of these subdivision components is mastered, it is not only helpful to correctly understand word bacteria, but also helpful to memorize other words (such as debacle). Are words bacteria and debacle really connected? Yes, it does. I'm not going to tell you about the connections, none of you feel it. If I told you the connection, you would say oh! oh! oh! Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!
The breakthrough of word morphology has opened up the imagination space for the semantic research of words. For example, axiom means "a statement universally accepted as true; maxim ", and its main morpheme -ax- means "to drive". How does to drive evolve into "a statement universally accepted as true; maxim "? Besides, there are also a large number of words whose semantic evolution is not clear at all, which has become the eternal regret of generations of lexical experts, such as butterfly, cypress, gibbon, lizard, etc. the morpheme standard has solved these riddles scientifically, and the riddle itself is the best research topic for vocabulary experts.
The establishment of morpheme standard is enough to shock the English circle all over the world. Different from the earthquake, it has a small initial shock and a big aftershock, because many English lovers are not familiar with morpheme, let alone the standard of morpheme. This standard is only the first atomic bomb explosion in my English vocabulary research, and there is a more mysterious concept equivalent to the explosion of dozens of atomic bombs. For the time being, this mysterious theory is being kept secret. Please don't think that I am making sensationalism and mysticism. Please believe that the principle I set forth is not to tell all the truth and not to tell any lies.
三、 On morpheme memory method and its practical test
The morpheme memory method based on morpheme standard has a complete theoretical system, which is suitable for memorizing all words and for all English learners all over the world. It needs about 10 class hours for learning and training. It will cover or eliminate all other existing word memory methods. This method needs to be learned early in order to avoid thinking conflict with some unscientific memory methods.
1. Ten years ago, many lectures in middle schools and universities have proved that my method is welcomed by teachers and students. I saw the middle school teachers bow their heads and take notes. I heard an university teacher ask if I could leave information for him to teach students. I heard that some college students asked me to stay to give them long-term lectures.
2. I have given lectures to foreign students from Britain, America, Japan and South Korea, which makes me very confident. In the future, foreign students (including British and American students) may also need to come to China to learn this method.
3. This method should be used as a teaching material for memorizing words (even the countries that study English all over the world will use it as teaching material), which will greatly reduce the teaching burden of English teachers and the learning burden of English students. Once students have mastered this method, they will feel that morphemes are as simple and interesting as the building block games they played when they were children.
4. This method brings great convenience to memorize words, but it is not as convenient as eating instant noodles.
四、 Why did I succeed?
1. Responsibility is the father of success, failure is the mother of success. I memorized a lot of words by rote during my bachelor's and postgraduate studies (301 Hospital of PLA, Tutor Lu Shibi, academician), and got good GRE scores. But before and after my daughter was born, I began to think about how to help her memorizing words. At the beginning, I also used several methods, but all of them were upset because I was not satisfied with them. Until one time because of drinking too much and sleepless, suddenly realized the direction of breakthrough, and in this direction continue to improve.
2. Interdisciplinary research is my biggest advantage. Interdisciplinary research allows me to innovate in theory without being bound by the established rules and regulations of the English community.
3. Having a medical background is another advantage for me. Many words in English are related to medicine. Without medical background, it is difficult to analyze these medical words thoroughly, let alone draw inferences from one instance. My medical background can make them draw inferences from one instance (e.g. elbow).
4. Research time and energy are different. Before I retired, my spare time was "moving words". After retirement, I studied word memory wholeheartedly. The teachers in service have heavy teaching tasks, so they have no time and energy to study such a huge subject.
5. The object of the study is different. Teachers only care about the words they are going to teach this semester, which leads to the limitation of research objects and the inability to put forward systematic views. And I want to help all English lovers find a good way to memorize words, which requires the study of all English words (currently completed the public English words), so I can put forward a systematic point of view.
6. The philosophy of research is different. In order to let the students master the knowledge comprehensively, the teachers should study the words very carefully and deeply, that is to complicate the simple problems. In this way, they can step into the profound and unfathomable theory, and enter the artistic conception of famous teachers producing excellent apprentices. But I want to simplify the complex problems, let learners return to the simple and easy English theory, into the artistic conception of a pot of porridge to raise all monks (living) .In a word, it is the difference between letting students walk on their own (teaching people to fish) and walking with students on winding paths (giving people fish).
五、 Why didn't I write an article?
1. Since I put forward the morpheme standard, I need to use a large number of words to prove my point of view. Now I have completed the verification of more than 30000 words in the first draft, which has accumulated material to write articles in the future.
2. There are too many new ideas in the book. If they are all written into articles, I'm afraid I can't finish writing them in my life. Of course, I won't be able to finish my masterpiece. Many viewpoints in my research can be used as research topics for colleagues.
3. Confidentiality needs. My researchs are enough to benefit half of the world's people in English learning for generations, and thus make the achievements themselves become the largest advertising platform with the widest audience and longest duration in the history of the world.
六、 Welcome experts to question
Morpheme standard is established to facilitate the study and memory of words. Theoretically, it is derived from the abstract concept of morphemes. Nevertheless, it is believed that it will lead to a "query and debate" that will help me forge ahead. For those who have doubts, I would like to thank you for your harsh advice, and I will certainly listen to them, because the content of the new method really needs to be polished. Secondly, please read the ancient Chinese saying three times: "if you want to benefit the people, you don't have to follow the ancient; if you want to do something about the Zhou Dynasty, you don't have to follow the customs.". Please also read my advice three times: "if you follow suit, there is nothing new in academic research and no benefit to students. Why don't you surpass people at the bending lane? As long as history is moving forward and each has been leading the way for hundreds of years, isn't it a beautiful vision for mankind.
English professors, English teachers, English students, now that medicine has entered the gene age, what reason does our word research remain in the embarrassing era of "morpheme having only abstract concept", and what reason does our word memory stay in the chaotic era of "competing for the king of all kinds of methods" instead of quickly entering the era of unified morpheme memory?
七、 Thanks
Thanks to those English professors and English teachers who have helped me. It is you who inspire me with your own responsibilities, encourage me with your sincere opinions, and lead me with your invisible professional charm of teachers, so that I can go from obsession to obsession in the research of word memory. This road is full of ups and downs and challenges, I am still walking alone……
Greetings!
