Be Great, Be BOLD! The Marcel Boldú Newsletter March 2024

Dear Subscriber,

Welcome to the first edition of "Be Great, Be Bold”: The Marcel Boldú Newsletter!

It is with a mix of excitement and gratitude that I address you today to share something very special: the launch of my first newsletter, a space where I will share the latest news, projects, and professional challenges from behind my lens.

As a commercial photographer specialized in the art of capturing the essence of food, still life, and the vibrant world of lifestyle, this newsletter is born out of a deep desire to connect more intimately with you, my dear followers, clients, colleagues, and friends. Through this monthly window into my world, I hope not only to keep you updated on my projects, collaborations, and professional experiences but also to share knowledge, inspirations, and, of course, beautiful images that awaken your senses and perhaps, even inspire your next dish.

Each edition will be a careful selection of content that reflects the best of my work and those with whom I have the honor to collaborate. From behind the scenes to the final results, from the challenges to the celebrations, this will be a space to grow together, learn from each other, and most importantly, to celebrate our shared passion for food and photography.

I am excited to embark on this new journey with you and sincerely hope you find in this newsletter a source of inspiration, joy, and, of course, an extra touch of flavor in your daily life.

Snapshot of the Month

In my recent collaboration with Soya Miami, I had the chance to propose a different approach to the restaurant's sushi photography, breaking away from conventional shots to elevate these new photographs to another level.

The idea was to deviate slightly from the typical and experiment with a selective focus technique that allowed me to make their sushi shine on the plate. The goal? To keep the sushi super focused from start to finish and blur everything else around it, placing the product spectacularly in the spotlight.

I love playing with diagonals in my photos; they add a touch of movement and make the image feel alive, much more interesting than a traditional frontal shot in this case due to the rectangular shape of the plate. The trick here was how to achieve all the sushi in focus on the diagonal plane, without losing that blurry background effect that makes it stand out so much.

The answer was in a special camera that allows tilt, shift, and swing adjustments. Using an aperture of f:4 and adjusting the swing movement in the lens, we achieved that incredible effect we were looking for, highlighting the sushi in a unique way.

Here, you can see in this sketch the application of the Scheimpflug Principle, which states that the camera plane, the lens plane, and the subject plane intersect along a common line. This principle is particularly leveraged through the swing movement of the lens, allowing the focus plane angle to be adjusted so that the entire subject can be brought into focus

For this project, we used the same props and surfaces from the restaurant and had the talented food stylist Kimberly Tabor to enhance the sushi's presentation.

Additionally, I had the opportunity to capture the essence of the restaurant, which was a pleasure thanks to its impressive interior design and perfect lighting that greatly facilitated my work. Working in spaces like this is inspiring, and as someone passionate about light, I enjoyed photographing each area.

Until the next edition, I wish you perfect light and endless creativity. With appreciation and a shutter always ready, I look forward to having you join this ongoing visual journey, full of flavor and style.
