I grew up in “Yorkville” a neighborhood in Manhattan. The area was settled first by the Irish immigrants, then the German, Hungarian and followed by every wave of new United State’s citizens. Even my parents, expat Tennesseans, found their way to the East River.?From papaya juice to paprika you could find everything here, then, but not now.

As a tiny child I marveled at Paprika Weiss, a Hungarian food store hung with sausages, and possessing a magical upper level stuffed with kitchenware, folkloric dolls, and embroidered blouses. Around the corner was a tiny marzipan store whose window of candy was a constant draw. German, Italian and French restaurants, record stores and of course Grays papaya were all around the corner.?Those streets full of languages from around the world were home ...
