The Gravy Cup for Boys and Girls Haven, home buying grant, Spring gardening and mindfulness!

Greetings!

I surmised it was time to touch base again and give you the scoop on some upcoming events - one of them being my favorite of the year. I also wanted to remind you to archive the newsletter I sent that included winter tips. Most people didn’t get to use them and might forget, ha! I am looking forward to getting an early start on gardening though, and we’ll have some notes on that as well.

Drumroll please…

Benefitting the Boys and Girls Haven of Louisville, I present to you the 2017 Gravy Cup! An event with no peer, we will be taste testing the best of traditional, non-traditional, and vegan/veggie gravies at The Gravy Cup! A trophy will be awarded to the winners of each category. An additional trophy will be awarded for the “People’s Choice Award” as voted by the attendees of the event. Our panel of celebrity judges will taste all entries and make their selections based on the criteria of: Taste, Presentation, and Originality

We’re expecting about a thousand or so guests based on past numbers. The event is Saturday February 25 - Mellwood Arts Center - 11 AM to 2 PM - $15, children under 12 $5. All tickets and information at TheGravyCup.com OR check us out on social media on our Facebook page

Curious as to what the event will look like? Check out a promo video from a couple of years ago here ----> Gravy Cup video

We will have Bloody marys, mimosas and a variety of other spirits available for purchase, LIVE Ragtime and Dixieland music by none other than Rick Quisol and the Derby City Dandies! You may even see Mayor Greg Fischer there!

Do you know someone that wishes to become a homeowner some day? On Wednesday March 17, funds will become available for the Welcome Home program. A forgivable grant of up to $5,000 is available for those who qualify. The grant can be used in conjunction with VA, FHA, or conventional loans and is forgiven after 5 years of occupancy. This program is only available to certain lenders, I recommend contacting Bobby Clifton of Cross Country mortgage for more information. His number is 502.345.4895 or you may email him at [email protected]. The grants only last as long as the fund does, so you’ll want to contact him soon.

Whether for beauty or for taste, few activities match gardening for connecting you with the earth. Although you can’t always control such variables such as weather, a few constants remain. Here are some ideas to get a head start so that you’ll provide the most favorable environment for your outdoor plants.

  1. Clean it out. First and foremost, removing any debris that remains from winter is the most important thing to get started. This will allow more sunlight to reach the ground, warming it.
  2. Revitalize the soil. Over the course of last year’s growing, the nutrients in the soil have been depleted. Test your soil and choose the right fertilizers for your planting.
  3. Fix any broken fences, bowing raised beds, blocks or stones that aren’t in place, etc.
  4. Weed young spring weeds, and get them by the root. That will be easiest this time of year, before the root structures start growing.
  5. Prune your trees and shrubs, but only remove dead structure if it is not a fall budding plant.
  6. Use diatomaceous earth in the soil. This will cut down on pests and is an organic pesticide.
  7. Plant appropriately for the season. Early spring planting may consist of bulbs, potatoes, and leafy greens like kale or spinach.

Would you like to draw, but think you can’t? Sketching is for everyone — whether or not you think you can. The Speed’s weekly sketching program, See Stop Sketch, provides drawing materials and sketching prompts to guests every Saturday. Explore the galleries, look closely, and try different drawing techniques. Materials will be available for pick-up at the front desk. Free with admission.
