Gratitude for Travel and Culture: A Pounamu Story
Traveling has always been one of my passions. I love exploring new places, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures. I believe that travel is not only a way to see the world, but also a way to grow as a person. Travel challenges me to step out of my comfort zone, to adapt to different situations, and to appreciate the diversity of life.
One of the benefits of traveling is that it exposes me to different perspectives and values. I learn to respect and honor the traditions and beliefs of the people I encounter, even if they are different from my own. I also learn to be grateful for the opportunities and privileges that I have, and to share them with others. Traveling teaches me to be humble, generous, and compassionate.
A Gift of Pounamu
One of the most memorable and touching experiences I had while traveling was in New Zealand. I was there this week for a business trip, and I had the chance to attend a dinner with some of my Microsoft team members. It was a wonderful evening of food, wine (Sauvignon Blanc of course), and conversation. But what made it truly special was the gift that they gave us at the end of the night: a pounamu.
A pounamu is a greenstone pendant that is carved from nephrite jade. It is a sacred and precious stone in the Maori culture, and it symbolizes strength, protection, and connection. Each pounamu has a unique shape and meaning, and it is often passed down from generation to generation. To receive a pounamu as a gift is a sign of great respect and friendship.

Before they gave us the pounamu, they explained the ritual that goes along with it. Each member of the Microsoft team at our dinner held the stone, which puts their 'Mana' into the stone, and then shared some well wishes with us. Mana is a bit of strength, soul, essence and spirit. The idea is that when you wear the pounamu you carry a part of them with you to give you strength and support.
Gratitude and Connection
I was deeply moved by this gesture of kindness and generosity. I felt honored and grateful to receive such a meaningful gift from people who I had just met, but who made me feel like family.
