Gratitude To-Do List to Accelerate Your Career

Gratitude To-Do List to Accelerate Your Career

Have you noticed how small things at work can make or break your day? A kind word or a comment of appreciation from a client or co-worker can turn a bad day into a good one—or make a good day even better.

Think about the details you share with your spouse or friends at the end of the day. A workday recap usually falls into two categories: 1) venting about job dissatisfaction or 2) sharing something positive that someone said or did that made you feel good. That second kind of reflection, when repeated over time, leads to a more fulfilling career.

If one small act of acknowledgment or kindness can make such a big difference in our outlook, why not incorporate more gratitude into our daily work routine? The ROI (return on investment) is immediate.

Yet, many would say gratitude in the workplace is rare. Why?

Maybe we’re too caught up in our own success to thank those who’ve helped us along the way. Or perhaps our jam-packed schedules prevent us from noticing and appreciating others’ contributions.

But without making a little extra effort to show appreciation, how can we expect teammates, colleagues, or employees to consistently go the extra mile?

As we strive to do more with less, we should remember the universal need for recognition. Fortunately, this challenge has a simple solution. Below is your gratitude ‘To-Do’ list—a set of commonsense actions for showing appreciation at work:

?- Send a simple thank-you note, email, or text for courtesies such as someone’s time, shared expertise, introductions, referrals, or business lunches. It’s amazing how rarely people do this!

?- Explain how others’ contributions impact critical projects and thank them in advance for their help. A little context goes a long way.

?- Include words of encouragement in your daily emails and texts. You’ll be amazed at the immediate and positive responses.

?- Ask yourself, “Who helped me with this?” for every accomplishment, and be sure to thank them.

?- Send a note or email to organizers of webinars, training sessions, and other opportunities from which you’ve benefitted. It shows that their work matters.

?- Find a reason each day to compliment someone on their effort or attitude. Emphasize the positive impact they have on you and others.

These simple actions yield powerful benefits. People prefer to work with those who appreciate their efforts, and co-workers, colleagues. Even prospects may seek you out for important projects because they know their work will be valued.

Showing appreciation is also a way to stand out in today’s competitive business world. Differentiating yourself in positive ways always pays off.

Most importantly, practicing gratitude will make you feel great about yourself. Good manners are easy to practice and offer big returns in your day-to-day work satisfaction.

This is such an important idea and post, Lisa - you never know when a kind word can make someone's day, week, or even career. Even though I work to do this, your post reminded me to not forget to do these things - especially in the month of Thanksgiving and upcoming holidays in December.
