We have all heard the phrase ‘The power of positive thinking' but what does it actually mean. What power can lie in not being negative about a situation or life in general?
Gratitude lies at the center of positive thinking. It creates a platform from which to jump forward and think positively about yourself and your situation.
Meet Grazelda and Christina. They are sisters from Worcester in the Western Cape who decided to live this way of thinking all year round in 2021. They kept gratitude jars and stuffed them with little notes of gratitude during the year. On New Year’s Eve, they emptied out these jars and went down a memory lane of thankfulness. This year they have decided to fill their jars of gratitude yet again.
Grazelda says: “Time may make you forget and rob you of the good things and blessings in life. If you don’t write it down, you forget the good things and focus on the bad ones as human nature is. “
Scientists have established that gratitude “boosts the neurotransmitter serotonin and activates the brainstem to produce dopamine”. These are our happy hormones that get released when we experience pleasure. Gratitude might then give the same effect as eating chocolate or having an awesome workout. It also improves wellbeing and health by promoting better sleep, lowering blood pressure, improving one’s sense of mindfulness, increasing energy, improving one’s mood and feelings of happiness and decreasing stress.
Since we are the start of the year, now would be the best time to start your own gratitude challenge. Here are some daily tips to add some thankfulness to your life.
·????????Write down three things that you are thankful for.
·????????Go one full day without complaining.
·????????Make an effort to smile more throughout the day.
·????????Engage in a random act of kindness.
·????????Go outside and appreciate the beauty of nature.
·????????Do something nice for a co-worker.
·????????Write down five things that you like about yourself.
·????????Notice positive traits about your colleagues.
·????????Recognize today as a gift.
