The Grateful Skeptic

The Grateful Skeptic

I’m full of?gratitude?this Thanksgiving but - I used to think it was total BS.

If you know me, you’ll know I have coaches?(Yes, coaches. Plural. I love them).?

Not for running a marathon, although never say never, but for different aspects of my life and career.? (BTW If you feel like you need a career coach in your life right now, send me a message. I take on 5 clients a year and have a network of other coaches I love who I can refer you to as well.)

One of my coaches talks a lot about?gratitude.

Just like ‘authentic’ and ‘being present', it’s a bit of a buzzword these days. But it would have scarcely registered on your radar before 2013.

The proven benefits of?gratitude?include decreasing depression, increasing long-term happiness, and improving relationships.

“Ummmm, what exactly am I paying for again?!?”

I kept thinking when my coach?Mary?started harping on about?gratitude?and the above benefits.

I’m a skeptic. So, when I first heard about these so called benefits of gratitude from my coach - I was dubious.

But like any good coach,?Mary?pushed me, gently at first and then a little more forcefully to give it a red hot go - and see what happens.

And ya know what? IT WORKED. (I was shocked too)

But nowadays? I'm a raging gratitude convert.

I don’t get out of bed these days until I’ve come up with 3 things I’m?grateful?for. I can honestly say it's single handedly changed my outlook and perception on life, work and my relationships.

Here are my top tips on what’s worked for me to integrate it into my life - not just at Thanksgiving:

  1. Put Pen to Paper.?Thinking about the reasons you’re?grateful?is helpful, but nowhere near as practical as writing it down.??(Not going to lie, I don’t always write them down, sometimes I just say them out loud, share them with Ryan or if I’m pressed for time I just think through 3 things in my head.)
  2. Be specific.?Saying?“I’m?grateful?for my friends”?isn’t as strong as saying?“I’m?grateful for my friend Chantelle who texted me when she knew I was having a rough day”.
  3. Don’t ignore the small things.?Not every?grateful?item has to be groundbreaking. Being?grateful?for the roses growing on your neighbor’s fence or the chit-chat you have with your barista - it all counts ??

If you have a?gratitude?practice, comment below and lmk!

Love the guidance on being specific on gratitude. Being specific helps me to focus on how someone impacted me, why was it important at that moment in time and makes me look for how I can positively impact someone else. Layne Beachley AO has a great journal that is great for kids or adults to help make gratitude a daily practice

Great article, Meggie. Thanks for sharing!

I'm a huge fan as well. I love the way you're doing it. I practice a slight off-shoot of this, which at first sounded very woo woo and not me at all, but now I love it. What I do when I face a challenge, e.g. something not going my way / me making a slip up, is ask myself "what's good about this?" or "what's the gift for me here?" - it's amazing how quickly you can turn something that would have felt like a big fat negative into something actually quite useful / positive. This is my gift to you Meggie x And your amazing followers. Love your work as always x
