A Grateful Heart

The benefits of practicing gratitude are proven scientifically. As I read and prepared for writing my book, "Fearfully and Wonderfully Made: A Grateful Heart ," I was astounded by all the studies that show how gratitude helps you:

  • live longer
  • decrease stress
  • build better relationships
  • become more resilient
  • become less self-centered
  • become kinder
  • be healthier
  • sleep better
  • increase productivity
  • better achieve goals
  • become less materialistic
  • become more optimistic
  • become more spiritual
  • have better self-esteem

It sounds like an ad for a wonder drug. And yet, you don’t need a prescription to get it. It costs nothing, and it’s available to all of us.

Gratitude is the feeling of being thankful. It’s joy, appreciation, or being grateful for something or someone. When you have gratitude, it’s impossible to hold bitterness in your heart. We must be intentional about practicing thankfulness, regardless of the season we find ourselves in. How can we be vigilant about giving thanks in a season of discouragement, disease, disappointment, debt, drama, death of a loved one, or personal disaster? I find it's easier to get through a tough season when I remember that it's just a season. And, seasons of life change just like the seasons of our calendar change.

Consider your current circumstances and focus on what is good about your life right now, today. Don’t focus on what’s not going right or the trials you are facing. Instead, focus on the positives. It might seem like there isn’t much to be grateful for, but keep looking. You will find something to start your gratitude list.?

I find it easier to practice gratitude with a guide or daily journal that helps me keep this important concept "top of mind." What is your normal routine in the first few minutes of your morning? What intentions are you setting in the first minutes of your day??
