Grateful Heart, Craftsmanship Spirit: A Story from Engineer Zhang of the Northern China Workshop

This year marks the tenth year of Zhang Wengang's career at WinKong Marine and the 22nd year in the ship repair industry.

Zhang was engaged in dockwork prior to 2015. As one of the first businesses to establish itself in Zhoushan Jin Hai Wan, WinKong Marine was at the time assembling its repair staff. "I was treated to dinner by firm president Lee when I first met him in Huangdao. I was really struck by his friendly manner," Zhang remembers grinning.

He started out as a machinist on primary engines and generators after entering the firm. In the Jin Hai Wan Shipyard, he organised an advance team with Engineers Sheng, Yao, and three others. The shipyard, which was yet in its infancy, was surrounded by desolation throughout the chilly winter. The crew had to work through the night on a regular basis due to a lack of tools and equipment and strict ship maintenance deadlines. "Having everyone together gave me confidence and made the work especially motivating," Zhang says. With mutual support, the group successfully overcome several obstacles and enhanced the efficiency and calibre of their job.

As the company thrived, the initial advance team members grew into key players, taking on roles in various workshops. Zhang returned to the Qingdao workshop and established his "small family" there. Reflecting on his ten years at WinKong Marine, he expressed gratitude, saying, "During several times in my life when I needed help, the company was always there to offer a helping hand, whether for me personally or for my family. The meticulous, reliable, and warm care from the company has left a lasting impression on me."

Zhang has consistently received praise from coworkers, leaders, and shipowners for his ability to perform on riding repairs and even the most difficult dock repairs. He attributes his success to his unwavering conviction that "loving and excelling at whatever job you do." "The hardest days are behind us," when questioned about his view for the future, with the heart and mannerisms of a craftsman, he said "I have no fears about the future and am full of hope."
