G is the seventh letter of the English alphabet. It’s a consonant. Words that begin with G with a positive intonation include gay, gift, good, great, glow, gem, goodness, glitzy, and generosity. There are also plenty of words that begin with G with a negative intonation, but there is no need to be grumpy, so we won’t go there!

Since #GivingTuesday is on November 28th, 2017, I would like to express how grateful I am to have so many wonderful people in my network. Additionally, I would also like to express my gratitude for all of the volunteers - Board members, chapter leaders, and members including #veterans who help pay it forward in any way they can.

Members of the Philadelphia Area Great Careers Group who have been abruptly downsized from their jobs or are just beginning to seek a job need to have a lot of grit and resilience to keep networking themselves out of unemployment or underemployment. They also need support through education and resources to help them get back on their feet and they can get that support through our 11 chapters (and growing) that we currently have in Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery Counties in PA, as well as NJ (and hopefully in DE and center city) to round out the Greater Philadelphia Area. We operate our RSVPs on our Meetup of over 2900 members.

People who are employed or self-employed also need to engage in career management to keep their career documents or LinkedIn profiles up to date. Some of those people who are employed may work for companies who offer matching gifts, perhaps through GivingTuesdayChesco.org or Benevity.com or Guidestar.org or other. No matter! We appreciate your generosity from $1 donation to buying us the equivalent of a cup a coffee, a pot of coffee, or more. It all adds up!!!

We are an all-volunteer organization helping people from our hearts, but we have basic operating expenses like any business does and we need your help. We NEED your GENEROSITY. We NEED your financial support, not only on #GivingTuesday but EVERY DAY, so we can increase our programming for a greater local impact.

We especially rely on those who have landed jobs and were grateful for our support while they were in transition and then have expressed their gratitude through their generosity.

If you think about Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs, the bottom rung of the triangle is THE basic physiological needs such as water and food. The Philadelphia Area Great Careers Group is not a food bank, so we don’t give out food. What we do DO is give education, resources, and opportunities to network to those who seek employment or advancement in their careers and we do this for FREE or for a very low fee.

Basically, we operate along the lines of the saying, “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”

Here are some testimonials from members from our website:

"I've have attended the career success group Meetups. If you're unemployed or underemployed, it's a wonderful way to network with others who are in a similar situation as you, in a supportive environment. Whether you're shy or outgoing, it helps to be with people who can relate to the challenges and emotional issues of job searching, exchange ideas, mention postings, point out helpful upcoming events, and motivate each other. People frequently point out they have connections in companies where others in the meeting may want to apply." ~Bill Indik

"Through the course of my transition, from teacher to training and instructional design, I participated in numerous networking groups in the Delaware Valley. These ranged from “job club” activities to more structured networking activities to professionally designed skills workshops. The consistency and support of others in a similar position, the exposure to industry trends, and the opportunity to practice interpersonal communication was a significant factor in my professional growth during this time, especially as an introvert. The skills and the support grew side by side when I practiced them on a consistent basis. Most of all, I made numerous professional contacts and a few good friends." ~Matt Cinelli

"I attribute much of my interviewing success to the Philadelphia Area Great Careers Group members. Thank you for all your support, advice, and kindness throughout my transition. You are an amazing group of people! Of course, I have learned we are always in transition and that it is people, like us, who understand how important it is to cultivate relationships and help others. I am blessed to have met everyone in our Meetups." ~ Susan Denby
