Grateful. Connect the dots. Still Day 1.
(Kéo xu?ng ?? xem ti?ng Vi?t)
I’m happy to share that after graduating from Kellogg in June and enjoying a fun summer with my family visiting from Vietnam and friends, I moved to Seattle and joined Amazon in August as a Senior Product Manager Technical, being a part of a team that helps sellers around the world to bring their products to more countries in shorter time and with cheaper cost by streamlining seller experience to meet compliance requirements, and that would eventually help to give buyers more selection too.
Now is also close to the Thanksgiving holiday in the US, so I would want to take this time to express my gratefulness towards my family, my friends, and my former colleagues for all the experiences that I’ve had, because without them, my today would not have been like it is today. Connecting the dots looking backward, now things seem to fall into place: (1) my parents invested in me with English classes and my sister tutored me with English homework, (2) going to RMIT University for a minor in entrepreneurship, (3) my first internship at Procter & Gamble, (4) opening Yummy Box restaurant, (5) my first fulltime job in Kotex team at Kimberly-Clark, (6) my first step into tech industry at ChoTot, (7) admission to Kellogg for the MMM program and first time to live far away from home, (8) creating Epeak English speaking site during Kellogg time, and now (1) I’m starting my Day 1 at Amazon. What a 30-year journey!
English
(1) It all started from learning English. I was born and grew up in Dalat, a mountainous town in Vietnam. Today, English learning centers can be seen almost anywhere in Vietnam, but English proficiency of Vietnam is still under the world average. When I was 10, there was no English learning center in Dalat at all. I still remember during my primary and secondary school time, spending my summers visiting my dad working in Ho Chi Minh City, I often got jealous with other kids there because they had English learning centers to go to everyday and also had Cartoon Network channel to watch at home. Thankfully, my parents, although (or because?) they could barely understand any English words, actively invested in me with English classes year after year, and, my 8-year-older-than-me sister proactively tutored me English at home (now my English is way better than hers haha). Indeed, English proficiency is the stepping stone that has opened so many doors for me: Thang Long Gifted High School for a class specialized in English, RMIT University which is the first English speaking campus in Vietnam, Kellogg School, and all the jobs that I got later on.
Career
(3) My first paid job is the internship in Sales team at Procter & Gamble when I was in the second year of my bachelor. Every day for 5 months, I woke up at 5:30 am, rode my motorbike for more than 1 hour from my home in District 7 of Ho Chi Minh City to Hoc Mon District in suburban area, and there I visited tiny mom-and-pop grocery stores to market shampoo and detergents to shop owners. It was the raining season, so more often than not, it rained. Heavily. Riding motorbike in the rain, I often cried and asked my soaking self why I had to do this hard as hell job but not just went home and did my homework.
20-year-old me soaking in water at that time didn’t know that challenging sales job would open a door for a marketing job later on.
(5) My second job is fulltime in marketing team at Kimberly-Clark. Of course, my experience with the sales job at P&G helped me get it. But, when I applied for a marketing role, I didn’t expect to be put in Kotex which is feminine sanitary napkins and to be the only boy in the team. I struggled a lot. A LOT. I struggled to understand the product, how it functioned, and how a female used it. That ambiguity took me to do a consumer research by myself from beginning to end. I recruited people for focus group interviews by posting on my Facebook and sending direct messages to girls “hey I want to learn how you would experience a new product of Kotex, come talk to me and I will have a nice gift for you”. Some of them thought I was a sick weirdo. Some of them replied “don’t you feel embarrassed, do you” (I was like “I do, but I can’t use sanitary napkins so do need your help”). But, more than 10 of them eventually showed up at my focus groups (so many that I had to put them into 3 groups) where I showed them a prototype of a new sanitary napkin product.
22-year-old me interviewing girls about sanitary napkins at that time didn’t expect that experience built up in me a heart for user empathy and a muscle to confidently interview any kinds of customers on earth, and that helped me to land my first job in tech industry as a product manager at ChoTot, a leading online buy and sell marketplace in Vietnam.
Above all, I’m grateful for having my old dear boss Cassandra Truong trust me that I could do things, encourage me, and suggest me do that homemade and nothing-to-feel-embarrassed-about consumer research
(6) On my first few days at ChoTot, no, first few months to be precise, I was so certain that I landed on another planet where I couldn’t understand the language of aliens aka my colleagues. In meetings, they said something like UI, UX, API, CSS, so on and so on, and that alien language just drove me crazy. But I was so lucky, I need to capitalize LUCKY here and set its font size to 36 if not larger, to have peers and bosses who handhold and believed in me: anh Kelvin Vuong, uncle Mushroom, Dung Ha, anh Le Phuoc Phuc, just to name a few members of my dear family aka my ChoTot colleagues.
Thank you anh Vuong Minh Thuong for drawing on the office wall the whole ad flow and user flow during late nights for me, for teaching me Agile Manifesto enthusiastically, for writing post-it notes for user story mapping with me also on office wall and also at late nights (until 10pm that chi Vy gave you some missed calls asking whom you were with), and so on. Thank you uncle Mushroom Bryan Teo for always encouraging and motivating us to be a better version our ourselves (and to be the best PMs in Vietnam as your words). I remember you once said in a product meeting when I just joined that you hoped one day into the future, we would think back to our experience at ChoTot then would feel grateful for what you and Kelvin did. I do! Thank you D?ng Hà for from teaching me the smallest things in PM job (what a lead means, what a click is, how to query data, and so on) to supporting me in releasing small and big features such as Snap Ad. Thank you anh Lê Ph??c Phúc for having faith in me and what I did, for trusting me personally, and for supporting me in pursuing my goals.
From the deepest of my heart, since I graduated from ChoTot (yes it was truly a school for me to learn firsthand product management lessons), I have been always grateful for all the experiences that I had there with my colleagues: from interviewing users to analyzing data to designing user interface to grooming product backlog to testing the websites and apps.
24-year-old me at that time didn’t expect that these experiences would prepare me for a journey to Kellogg for the MMM program focusing on the intersection of business and human-centered design, and to Amazon. If I’m just allowed to pick only one experience to be grateful for, I would pick ChoTot. No doubt.
Entrepreneurship
(2) (4) (8) Although I have never created a successful business, my entrepreneurial experiences with Yummy Box and Epeak did give me stories to tell during interviews at Kimberly-Clark, ChoTot, Kellogg, and Amazon Also, to connect the dots, the experience of serving customers at Yummy Box helped me realize that I was more into consumer facing projects, and that’s why I applied to a marketing role at Kimberly-Clark. And, the recognition of the importance of how English could open doors for a person’s endeavors motivated me to create Epeak to help young professionals in Vietnam to speak English better, and the experience of creating Epeak helped me realize that there’re so many things in the United States for me to learn and explore, and that’s why I applied to Amazon. But, what’s the most important is, I didn’t and couldn’t do them alone, but did Yummy Box with my sister and parents and uncles, and did Epeak with Kellogg friends and professors, and I’m grateful for having them in my journeys.
Still Day 1
Now here at Amazon, I come back to start from Day 1. If my early time at ChoTot was like at another planet, now I feel like I’m at another galaxy, with a lot of ambiguity and confusion, where I’m not even sure about what I’m not sure lol. There are so many difficulties and challenges that I often moan about with friends. But I know that, no matter what, one day when looking back, I will be also grateful for the struggles that I’ve had and the people that I’ve met here.
There’s so much to learn and so much to build. “There’s so much stuff that has yet to be invented. There’s so much new that’s going to happen. This is still Day 1” – I borrow this from Jeff. I also have a favorite video of him talking about what Day 2 looks like: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTwXS2H_iJo
Final words
I believe each of us has so many things and people to be grateful for. It’s just the matter of whether we would sit down and spend time to think of them. How about you? Reflecting on your whole life thus far, what are you grateful for? Connecting the dots looking backward, how do you see them fall into place? No matter how many dots you’ve been through, do you feel that it’s still Day 1? And, if I can be a dot in your life in anyway, let me know.
