The Grass is Always Greener
Earlier this month I attended a Business Summit in Huntington Beach, California. I arrived on Wednesday and the part of the summit I was attending started on Thursday morning.
I went out for a 3-mile run late on Wednesday night and when I came back the valet drivers were pulling this brand-new Lamborghini Aventador from where it was parked in this photo to the front doors of the hotel. It was a total of fifteen feet but the valet guys were having the time of their lives.
While I was returning to my room I ran into Garrett J White, the man who owns the organization that was putting on the event, in the elevator. I quickly introduced myself as he was heading out to his car. Yes, that car. Awesome guy and it was great to get a chance to meet him before the conference.
As I made my way up to my room, took a shower, and prepared for the next day I imagined him speeding off to have dinner with the rest of his team before the summit.
Thoughts ran through my head that I should do the same. I should grab some of my friends who were in for the summit, get some dinner and have a few drinks. After all, the conference didn't start until 9 AM Pacific Standard Time and I was still running on Central Standard Time.
The next morning we watched a video during the first part of the conference. In the video was Garrett in the Lamborghini giving a speech to the camera that he must have been shot immediately after I saw him. To be able to shoot the amount of footage that we saw over the next two days made me realize one thing...
There was no dinner, no drinks, no hanging out with the team talking about how awesome the next two days were going to be.
There was only the work. The never-ending work of an entrepreneur on his business.
I do the same thing but for the one moment, it was easy for me to tell myself the story that the grass is always greener on the other side. This experience quickly grounded me.
What people don’t see is the work behind the scenes so you can be delivered that polished product or service.
The service that I offer to the marketplace, that this story really connects with is Search Engine Optimization or SEO. In short, it is ranking on search engines.
Every morning I wake up at 5 AM and study something about SEO for an hour before I go to the gym. Every night I research what I am going to study the following morning so I can wake up and know exactly what I am going to study and where it is located. This is every day including weekends. This week I have a two-hour lunch meeting with one of my SEO friends to compare what we are seeing, and what is working.
From these learnings, I gather some theories and test them throughout the week, but all my clients see are the rankings of their website going up.
The fact is you don't need me to make your website rank on search engines. You can do it yourself.
All you need to do is catch up do my ten years of studying this, the art and science of SEO, and then keep up with the trends on a daily basis.
Or you can just do what you are great at and hire me to do what I am great at.
