The Grass Is Always Greener

The Grass Is Always Greener

Much of our unhappiness is due to our feeling of inferiority, that we are less than others, which can easily make us feel like losers. People are always dissatisfied with their situation and think others have it better.

This outlook, the grass is always greener on the other side of the fence, dates to the Greek poet Ovid in the first century B.C., was "The harvest is always richer in another man's field." The phrase usually means you can't have it all, and as soon as you get to the other side, you realize that the greener grass is illusional.

The things you want only sometimes seem more desirable once you have them. For example, other people's lives seem more desirable than ours. Appearance can be deceiving. Your neighbor may be better off and happier than they appear.

Know that you are a unique being. Like fingerprints, there is no one like you, and there will never be. The greenest grass opportunities for wealth and success are often found in one’s backyard or within oneself rather than on the other side of the fence or in distant or exotic locations. Focus on your side of the wall.

In his book Acres of Diamonds, Russell H. Conwell emphasizes “utilizing one's talents. He encourages individuals to recognize and develop their unique talents and abilities. Leveraging one's inherent skills and strengths can achieve great success.

Earl Nightingale perfectly summarizes this article: “If the grass is greener on the other side, it`s probably getting better care. Success is a matter of adhering to a set of common-sense principles anyone can master.”
