Graphic Magazine X2
Jamie Cornall
Recruitment Consultant at Represent - Currently recruiting Freelance Senior Designers, Design Directors and Creative Directors for branding agencies
Following on from my last post about Grafik Magazine... I got into a conversation with one of the Designers from SEA who worked on the redesign of the Magazine in 2006. It was his first actual job in the industry and he got handed this brief to work along side another designer (How's your luck?). He had some cool stories to tell about his time working on the magazine, including pulling all nighters and having to drop the final files to the printers on a DVD via taxi, something we can probably all relate to working on the industry in those years. I'm a big fan of the changes SEA made. I think they made it feel more premium than previous versions and it looks like they ditched the Lubalin Graph typeface which felt a little too techy and the obvious change is the logo on the cover.
Check out this cover of Fantastic Man. Wouldn't look out of place on the shelves now.
Illustrations and murals featured in most jobs last year. Here's one for Paul Smith by Gilles and Cecilie.
One of the interesting things for me is the advertising. Especially the recruitment agencies that advertised in the magazine at the time. Out of nine recruitment adverts only two of the agencies are still in existence. But what really struck me is the two that are in existence now are the agencies that appear to have moved with design trends and stayed relevant throughout the years with a number of website and brand updates. It really highlights to me the need to not stay static, keep reading, keep learning and have a real genuine interest in the industry we work in. I suppose this relates to everyone that works within the creative industry.
Again, apologies for the picture quality, scanning these beauties can be quite a challenge ;-)
Drop me a message if you have any questions and if you are looking for work, please don't hesitate to reach out.
