As freelancers, we often grapple with the daunting task of where to begin or what to prioritize. Let's unravel the mysteries together and uncover the secrets to building a thriving freelance business."

As you take the leap and venture into freelancing for the first time, there are some foundational things that you need to learn before you can get started and in a few second you are going to find out what they are

  1. Finding Your First Clients

Finding your first client can be easier than you think , here are some effective strategies for finding clients as a freelance graphic designer:

  • Utilize Your Network: Start by tapping into your existing network of friends, family, colleagues, and acquaintances. Let them know about your freelance graphic design services and ask if they or anyone they know might be in need of design work.
  • Online Platforms: Leverage social media platforms like LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to showcase your portfolio and reach out to potential clients. Join relevant groups or communities where your target clients might be present and actively participate to establish your presence.
  • Freelance Websites: Sign up on freelance platforms like Upwork, Freelancer, Fiverr, and Behance to create profiles showcasing your skills and portfolio. Bid on projects that align with your expertise and actively communicate with potential clients.

2. Create a killer portfolio

Your portfolio should always be updated with your most recent/best- performing work (as long as your clients consent to you doing so).

As your skills improve, you should slowly cycle out your lower-quality work with newer projects so that the overall quality of the portfolio gradually improves.

3. Getting paid

Freelancing comes with its own set of challenges, especially when it comes to pricing your work and ensuring you get paid on time. Here's a simplified breakdown:

  • Pricing Your Work: You have options when it comes to pricing - hourly rates, fixed project fees, or ongoing retainers. Decide what works best for you.
  • Setting Up Payments: Make invoicing hassle-free by setting up a system that allows for various payment methods. Include essential details like contact information, price, payment deadline, and tax information to ensure smooth transactions.
  • Managing Your Finances: Many freelancers worry about financial stability. Start by budgeting, saving, and addressing taxes early on to build financial resilience and avoid living paycheck to paycheck.

By taking proactive steps in pricing, invoicing, and financial management, freelancers can lay a solid foundation for a successful and sustainable freelance career.

4. Client don't always come to you

When transitioning your graphic design passion into a side hustle, it's crucial to understand that clients won't always come knocking on your door. You'll likely need to actively seek out opportunities to secure new clients, especially if you're new to commissioned work.

However, the process of attracting clients isn't as daunting as it may appear initially. One effective strategy is to establish a professional website to showcase your design portfolio. Not only does this platform serve as a repository for your past projects, but it also enhances your visibility on search engines like Google, making it easier for potential clients to discover your services.

Don’t sit around and wait for clients to come to you. Sure, you can get a few inquiries here and there, but if you want consistent work, sometimes you need to make it happen."?—Danielle Podeszek, Freelance Graphic Designer

5. Be patient

Starting Abarang Company wasn't an overnight success. Before venturing into entrepreneurship, I spent time as a freelance graphic designer, facing the challenges of building a sustainable income from scratch. Those early days were marked by uncertainty, but I persisted, knowing that patience would be key. As I transitioned into running my own company, this lesson in patience continued to resonate deeply. In my first month at Abarang, despite having a few client projects underway, I still felt the pressure to secure more business. Conversations with friends and family often centered around inquiries about new clients, which sometimes left me feeling defensive. However, I recognized that this impatience was part of the journey. With a clear vision of the clients and projects I aimed to attract, I learned to decline certain opportunities, confident that I would eventually align with my "dream clients." This journey reinforced the importance of patience in entrepreneurship, a lesson I continue to carry forward in the growth of Abarang Company.

6. Stick to a schedule

Before venturing into entrepreneurship, my days were rigidly structured by the demands of a traditional job. Transitioning to freelance work brought newfound freedom, but also the need for disciplined time management aligned with my goals. Now, as the founder of my own company, I have the flexibility to pursue personal interests like music amidst managing my business. Balancing work and passion has become the cornerstone of my entrepreneurial journey, transforming my days into a harmonious blend of productivity and fulfillment
