Graphic and Character design ~ Von Dolhen's
I was hired as a graphic designer on this job to design in-store signage and stationery for a frozen yogurt store in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. The Client liked the style of old chalkboard menus and so the staff T-shirts were created in that vision - with a little old-timey distressing.
My business partner Lloyd Chrein, was interested in exploring character design to put a face to the client's business - inspired by the likes of Bob's Big Boy burger chain. I went through quite a few designs before we found the face/s we were looking for.
Now I needed to design a few variations based on the 'T-birds' style kids and create several poses and color combinations.
We had a set of guys we liked but it seemed a little too boy-centric so I added a gang of girls to even things out.
The client was also considering fixing up an old hot rod to drive around and advertise the shop.
I designed a range of shirts centered on the characters which could be sold to customers. I really liked the idea of creating a shirt that looked like a kids version of a biker jacket.
I also created some additional loyalty cards, Menus and posters.
We discussed creating short animations for flat screen TVs situated above the machines but unfortunately the shop closed the following year. Aside from the signage and website, the characters didn't get much of a debut. C'est la vie!
