Grant Money for Individual Artists

Having the nonprofit 501(c)(3) status is the basic eligibility requirement to apply for most grants available from government, corporate and foundation grants.

Arts is one of the few categories of funding that awards grants to individual applicants.?This includes opportunities across all arts disciplines.

The overwhelming majority of grants are only available to tax-exempt nonprofit organizations 501(c)(3) organizations and publicly-funded entities like schools, libraries, hospitals, parks, etc.

One of the first places to look is U.S. cities and counties that have departments dedicated to the arts.?Sometimes called "Arts Agencies," "Cultural Arts Departments" or something similar.

Larger cities are more likely to have budgets to support some type of Arts Department.?Those that do, may offer grants to arts organizations, as well as to individuals, to produce community festivals, musical projects and other types of arts programs.?If they do offer grants from public funds, they are required by law to make an announcement and post the information so that the public is aware of the opportunity.
