Granite's Nevada Equipment Team Celebrates Six Years Injury-Free

In celebration of Construction Safety Week 2023, our Nevada Region Equipment Department celebrates six years without an OSHA Recordable Injury. The milestone was achieved through teamwork, camaraderie, personal accountability, and a commitment to overall safety.

"This achievement reiterates the team's firm commitment to safety and is a testament to everyone at Granite for prioritizing a safe working environment every day," said Brandon Carlson, Nevada Regional Safety Manager.

Carlson believes that Granite's Speak Up, Listen Up philosophy, that focuses on educating employees on providing safety-related feedback to co-workers, has been instrumental in the department's six-year injury-free success rate.

Speak Up is based upon the idea that every employee has the right and responsibility to provide constructive feedback when anyone is working unsafely. Listen Up allows employees to listen when corrective coaching is provided, resulting in positive safety culture. "The team's achievement supports that the Speak Up, Listen Up philosophy and culture directly results in positive safety outcomes," Carlson explains.

Restructuring weekly safety meetings has also contributed to this injury-free-milestone. At the start of each week, crews are responsible for researching and presenting safety topics, further supporting safety ownership. Safety meetings feature an in-depth discussion on specific safety topics applicable to that week's work and a review of the previous week's work. In addition, the meetings reinforce the importance of personal responsibility to all workers.

"Our employees have developed a safety culture, resulting in a safe workplace. Each person is responsible for exercising ongoing diligence, commitment, and personal accountability, and we would like to congratulate the equipment department’s successful safety record," Carlson adds.
