Grandma learns to cook!!

Grandma learns to cook!!

My grandmother is a little over 75 years and she loves cooking!

So whenever I happen to go home, I get to gorge on delicious home-cooked food.

On one of these visits, almost a year ago, I caught her on video making her signature “undhiyu”.

She got frazzled. “Why are you recording me? I am not even wearing my new saree. I look so messy!”

And I hugged her back saying “Nani, I want to learn how you make this. May be one of these days I can try it out, afterall.”

“But you can write it down like those recipe books,” she argued.

“But naani… I can’t see you in the recipe books!” and I continued my recording!

The real reason was that I was too lazy to read out of the recipe book later! Videos are quick and easy right?

But you have no clue what awaited me last week, when I was facetime-ing with my folks. I see my grandmother glued to the TV and watching a Rasoi Show!

She refused to budge and came on call only after her show ended.

“What Nani, you are an awesome cook, why do you need to learn cooking now… from these Rasoi Shows of all things?” I complained.

And what she said next, made me think (and write this piece as well!)

“I watch these cookery shows for two reasons. One, to ensure that my methods are right; the way I cook, marinate, fry - is validated.

Second, to learn new stuff. A lot of these things like pasta, broccoli, purple cabbage etc. didn’t exist in our recipes. I want to use them too!”

It was a simple conversation. And yet profound.

She is 75+ and doesn’t “need” to learn cooking; I can totally vouch for her awesome, delectable dishes. And yet!!

It made me think how curious she is… her learning agility beats mine, if anything. What about you??

Think. Learn. Be Curious
