Grand challenges framework

Grand challenges framework

As we face grand challenges and wicked problems I still come back to the work of Professor Mariana Mazzucato and the framework she created. She talks about focusing on the problem - not the sectors, technologies or companies. The first step is to defined the challenge or the mission, the next step is to identify all the sectors that can play a role in the solution and then co-design the projects that bring all the sectors together to create a holistic solution. It provides a framework to break down the silos and create a space for innovation.....and serendipity.......and that all important question of......... " What if....."

This is from a paper she prepared, along with Dr George Dibb in 2019 - Mission - a beginner's guide . I highly recommend you complement this read with a book she published in 2022 - Mission Economy

How could you use this to address the grand challenges that face us all. Here is one example Mariana and George presented. Mobility is common to all of us - how do we ensure dignity and belonging for all - from cradle to grave?

Another challenge? - "Transitioning to a just and sustainable (Net Zero and Nature Positive) future".

Do you have ideas for grand challenges?

Australia is currently refreshing our National Science and Research Priorities?to reflect Australia’s ambitions and challenges. You have the chance to provide input - it doesn't have to be formal - it can be a diagram in a sketch book you photograph and email in, it could be dot points or grand challenges. The formal process finishes on the 31st March - but they are very open to input so keep sending in your ideas even after the 31st. You can find out more here - LINK

Thanks to Professor Cathy Foley for inviting us all to contribute our ideas to create a future that will deliver social, economic and environmental benefits for all Australians.

I am so grateful to Professor Anne Tiernan who always challenges and expands my thinking and who introduced me to Mariana's work.

Hi Liz, Great questions are such an important part of any conversation or to get to the heart of a complex or challenging issue. My three favourite questions 1. what if? 2. how can we? 3. what information do you need to change your mind?
