Filipino contemporary art is a dynamic and multifaceted reflection of the Philippines' rich cultural tapestry, complex history, and evolving societal landscape. It is a vibrant blend of indigenous influences, colonial legacies, and modern global perspectives, resulting in a diverse and compelling artistic landscape that continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Exchanging artistic visions and thoughts on Filipino Art with artist Rex Manalo was a refreshing cut through the history of graffiti art.

Graffiti's integration into contemporary art has been a transformative and influential development. It has evolved from its underground roots to become a recognized and valued component of the art world.

Graffiti, a form of visual communication born on the streets, has long been a subject of controversy and debate. Often dismissed as vandalism, it's a complex and multifaceted form of expression that deserves a closer look

Art vs. Vandalism: The debate over graffiti often revolves around whether it's art or vandalism. It's essential to recognize that graffiti exists on a spectrum. Some pieces are clearly works of art, showcasing impressive skill, creativity, and meaningful messages. While others may cross the line into pure vandalism, featuring little more than crude markings and defacement.

It was an irresistible invitation to express thoughts and expression on the vast walls. In his teenage years, these walls have become a platform to convey messages and sentiments. Soon enough Rex evolved from walls to canvases.

Roots in Tradition: Filipino contemporary art draws heavily from the country's indigenous artistic traditions, which are deeply rooted in the archipelago's diverse regional cultures. The artistic sensibilities address issues such as inequality, environmental concerns, religion and human rights. Many contemporary artists integrate and create a seamless fusion of old and new. Same values in a different twist.

The Art works presented during the exhibit talks about the seven deadly sins as applied to Social media and its impact on human behaviour. Using his Art, Rex conveyed his perspective on the use several platforms or apps. Equanimity was a resounding theme painted in silent grip. Many artists use their creations to engage with pressing issues like poverty, religion, inequality, human rights, and environmental concerns.

This engagement with important societal topics aligns graffiti with the contemporary art world's emphasis on pushing boundaries and sparking conversations.

Graffiti, as a subset of contemporary art, continues to serve as a vehicle for social and political commentary.

Colonial Legacy: The struggle for identity.

The Philippines has a history of colonization by the Spanish, Americans, and Japanese, each of which left an indelible mark on the nation's cultural and artistic identity. This colonial legacy has led to a complex interplay of influences, where artists grapple with their historical past while forging a unique contemporary voice.

Social and Political Commentary: Filipino contemporary art serves as a powerful vehicle for social and political commentary. Art as an avenue of protest and resistance, amplifying the voices of marginalized communities and challenging the status quo. Street art, in particular, initially emerged as a medium for grassroots activism and public discourse.

Diversity of Mediums: Grafitti, allows for experimentation and innovation, pushing the boundaries of what art can be and how it can be experienced.

Contemporary artists often explore themes of identity shedding light on the enduring impact of Colonial influence.

Cultural Resilience: Despite the challenges posed by economic constraints and limited institutional support, Filipino artists exhibit remarkable resilience. They form tight-knit communities, collaborate across disciplines, and create collectives to support and showcase their work. This grassroots spirit has fostered a thriving and inclusive art scene.

The Filipino contemporary art is a captivating fusion of tradition and modernity, deeply rooted in the nation's history and culture. It is a platform for artists to explore their identities, engage with critical societal issues, and contribute to a global dialogue. As it continues to evolve and gain recognition on the international stage, Filipino contemporary art remains an important and vibrant facet of the global art scene, offering fresh perspectives and narratives that resonate with audiences worldwide.

Graffiti remains a dynamic and polarizing art form, transcending traditional definitions of art and vandalism. It challenges societal norms, sparks conversations, and, at its best, beautifies urban environments. Whether you view it as an act of rebellion or a legitimate artistic expression, graffiti undoubtedly leaves an indelible mark on the world's cultural landscape. It's a reminder that even in the most unexpected places, creativity and self-expression can flourish.

The art itself describes the art of communicating to many through various forms of art, the music, the vocals, the painting, the #graffiti, the speeches, the dance, etc. Everyone has a way to express it in a way through various forms. Some are polished and gentlemen to address graffiti in a way that is consumable to many learned. There are many rural folks with their thoughts that could be fine or crude, yet it's their upbringing in expression . Well ! It can be controversial, political, real art, or even non consumable. Well! Appreciate Graffiti is worth its origin, which also reflects culture, civilization, and colonial influences. It's well established that graffiti also has its roots down human way of life across all categories of people from rich to poor. Very well articulated post that brings in lots of messages.
