Graduates Tips For Accelerated Industrial Learning In The Formative Years
Our mining company, OTML, has committed to an Institution-Industry partnership to enhanced the learning of our future technocrat leaders and OTML had been invited to give a guest lecture presentation on industry expectations of our graduates. This is the presentation which has been approved to be made public and which I gave as guest industry lecturer.
I offered them 'Tips For Accelerated Industry Learning In The Formative Years' which is a theme that aligns with the title and intents of my recently published book "Graduate Trainees Practical Tips for Accelerated Learning in Reliability Engineering and Maintenance at Ok Tedi Mine".
Two of the four intentions of my book are:
1. By having more professionals available in the short periods of time we will have a 'deep pool' of Papua New Guinean professional leaders to draw from whenever the need arises.
2. By accelerating the training of our people, especially our young graduates, we can expose them to increase roles of responsibilities quickly and 'burn-in' them early to create endurance so they can last long and qualitatively give back to the aspirations of our country.
This lecture was part of a series of lectures organized by the PNG UoT Mechanical Engineering Department to have industry professionals talk to our future engineering technocrats and leaders about the expectations of industry and what it will be like recognising and observing technical theories in practical applications as well as applying these theories in practice.
Ok Tedi Mining Limited provided the first speaker for this year and this lecture supports OTML's commitment our MD&CEO, Mr. KEDI ilimbit, had made recently with the PNG UoT to maintain industry-institution relationship.
Below is the brief run down of the lecture.
++++++++++++
I did the introduction and creating a connection back to the university and briefly talked about the 2023 highlights of OTML and the 2024 KRAs.
Then I covered the tips which included topics on:
*Keeping Your Notes
*Continuous Professional Development
*You Don't Fail Professional Exams! You Learn
*Positives Of Unsuccessful Interviews: Role Plays
*Writing Papers
*Risk Assessment and being decisive
*Mastering MS Excel
*Learning the ‘PROCESS’
I then discussed the key intents of my book which aligns to a core competency of ‘Process Knowledge’.
Then I demonstrated some case studies leveraging ‘Process Knowledge’ and MS Excel.
And finally I took questions.
+++++++++++++
I hope our young future technocrat leaders had gain some good insights into the expectations of industry to ease their transition into the work force.
Thanks, Gilbert
Ps. The Mechanical Engineering Department had also asked OTML to participate in the ARP meeting. ARP is the three letter acronym for Assessment Review Panel which the PNG UoT is actively seeking industry participation on the accreditation program with Engineers Australia.
