Lifelong Learning Bill becomes law

The new Lifelong Learning Bill has been recently enshrined in law, paving the way for a radical transformation of the student finance system. The Lifelong Learning Entitlement will allow adults to access loans, worth up to £37,000 in today’s fees, that can be flexibly used to upskill or retrain. This means people will be able to take out a student loan to pay for full-time courses such as university degrees or higher technical qualifications. New measures in the bill will allow universities and colleges to use a new method of calculation for maximum charges of tuition fees for different courses. This will help to ensure people can access education and training at a fair price. To learn more about the bill, click here.

Campaign launched to tackle loneliness of university students

The government is working to combat loneliness at universities by teaming up with a number of charities and student groups. Following a YouGov survey, it was reported that loneliness is experienced by 92% of students, with 52% of students having worries about loneliness before even starting their course. Since launching its strategy on loneliness, the government and its partners have invested more than £80m to tackle it. This includes up to £30m being allocated to the Know Your Neighbourhood Fund, creating volunteering opportunities in 27 areas to help combat loneliness. More than a quarter of UK Universities operating food banks for students

A report from the Higher Education Policy Institute found that more than one in four UK Universities are operating food banks for students for those affected by the cost of living crisis. It was also reported that three-quarters of universities offered discounted food and drinks to students. Worrying signs continue as more than half of UK students are working alongside their studies, seeing a 10% rise in two years. To read more on this matter, click here.
