Youth club on wheels hoping to improve young lives
A mobile youth club that aims to stop children "going down the wrong path" has launched with an amnesty bin to allow knives to be surrendered. The Always An Alternative van in Sheffield will work with young people at risk of knife crime, substance misuse and mental health issues. The charity's founder Anthony Oloseinde said that other youth services were not "getting to" those in need so he hoped to bring support directly to them. Click here to read more.
SLC pays over £5billion in student finance since the start of the academic year
On Wednesday, 16 October, the Student Loans Company (SLC) paid £2.3 billion in tuition fees to education providers on behalf of almost students. This follows the almost £3 billion that was paid in maintenance loans to students since the start of academic term in September. In total, SLC has paid over £5 billion in student finance in the 24/25 year so far. Click here to read more.
AA calls for ban on new drivers under 21 carrying passengers of similar age in UK
New drivers under 21 in the UK should be banned from carrying passengers of a similar age for six months after passing their test, a motoring organisation has urged. The AA estimated that introducing a graduated driving licence (GDL) would save at least 58 lives and prevent 934 people being seriously injured in road crashes each year. The AA would like to see motorists with a “G” graduated driver plate handed six penalty points for not wearing a seatbelt, which would mean they lose their licence. Click here to read more.
UK loses out on £19bn in annual GDP growth due to lack of social mobility
A lack of social mobility is costing the UK £19bn a year, a report produced by the cross-party thinktank Demos and the Co-op has found. The Social Mobility Commission , which advises the government, defines social mobility as “the link between a person’s occupation or income and the occupation or income of their parents”. The Co-op/Demos report details how in the UK, people from “lower socioeconomic backgrounds” are “far less likely to earn good incomes, even after accounting for levels of education”, with the World Economic Forum’s Global Social Mobility Index 2020 ranking the UK 21st out of 82 economies. Questions over how university runs up £53m deficit
A leading university has said it is in a "strong" financial position despite a report pointing to a projected 2023–24 deficit of £53m. Internal 英国剑桥大学 scrutineers stated in an annual report that there was no "clear understanding of what had happened or why" regarding the deficit. The report, external by the university's Board of Scrutiny said the deficit put "in doubt" some "longer-term aims". Click here to read more.
