NYCHA Pilot Updates

In November Gradient installed 36 All-Weather 120V window heat pump pilot units in New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) housing, as we prepare to deliver 10,000 more systems. In 4 days we replaced 36 radiators with cold-climate heat pumps capable of providing year-round heating and cooling in NYC, increasing the speed of retrofit by 10x compared to other cold-climate heat pumps.

Cost Savings

Passive House Accelerator Magazine highlighted?significant cost savings achieved with Gradient window heat pumps in NYCHA buildings. In fact, our All-Weather 120V window heat pumps can reduce energy costs by up to 51% compared to natural-gas-fired steam heat, and by up to 70% compared to fuel-oil-fired steam heat.? ?

In addition, analysis of this Urban Green report shows that non-NYCHA buildings in NYC that choose Gradient should see?capital cost savings of 48% compared to traditional heat pumps.

Resident Feedback

"I love it," said one NYCHA resident about her Gradient model. Another neighbor added, "Your skin was so dry, and it was either too hot or too cold. Ever since we have this, the air is so pure. You can breathe."?

An Update on Incentives

We've been busy working with incentive program administrators to adapt existing heat pump incentives to window heat pumps as a product type.?

For example, customers in ConEd's service territory may be able to take advantage of the ConEd Clean Heat program next year. This could provide a rebate of 50% of the cost of the system, up to $5,000 per apartment. In addition, the NYSERDA pathways program provides up to $4,000 per apartment and would be on a schedule similar to that of ConEd Clean Heat.
