Grades don't matter- my life exp
My brother got his pre-university board results today- he scored 85%. Math-98 and Physics-95. When I called to congratulate him, his voice sank. He wanted more marks. I realised how nothing has changed since the time I graduated. I secured 80% and my mom cried, and I cried along with her (did not realize what was wrong). Why don't we celebrate wisdom and not securing more marks (isn’t it just a number)? No, I am not against hard work or perseverance otherwise I would have never bagged the #halloffame, #dellchampionaward, Everyday hero and countless accolades from various customers I served at #dell as a Project manager for 5 years. I am not bragging. I am just telling how important it is to learn, to gain more knowledge and reach greater heights. Although I have 28 years of life experience, but my formative years were at #dellemc. What I learnt there; no school will teach you. No, my marks did not take me there nor helped me get those awards. I did well because I was mentored by great leaders and that is where my perspective changed. I started looking at the world through a different prism. I made several mistakes, but my leaders asked me to take them as #lessonslearnt. Sometimes I look back and I wish, if was made to feel special maybe I would have grown faster. We all need that nudge. We all want to be accepted and not insulted or compared for scoring low marks. High time, we change the education system and of course #parenting. Make students realize that #gradesdontmatter but #knowledge does. High time we identify the ward’s strengths and opportunities and help them play to their strengths!

Lead Network Engineer & Storage Architect at University Health System
4 年Very good read Rashmi. My daughter is preping for medical school and the focus on essays and MCAT to gain entrance is on the whole person and not just high academic achievement. Thankfully they recognize that a good doctor is not just the sum of her learning experience but also of community engagement, arts, sports, and more. They want well-rounded candidates that are capable of more than just high marks and are empathetic and posses a good sense of humanity and humility. I'm so glad you pointed this out in such a great way. I can vouch for your value as a lead project manager on several of our million dollar projects here at University Health System. You have shown a high degree of expertise and organiztion in helping us get our complex systems online but most importantly you accomplished goals with grace and a good helping of common sense when needed. We have always appreciated your comittment and seasoned expertise in making things work smoothly. Great article and so important for parents and teachers alike to pass on to students that are learning to become adults. Thanks

4 年Well said..it takes decades more to understand about marks/grades/ranks!! There are many boys and girls who can't afford education. And few stop in the middle at school/college due various reasons. And there are few who cry, don't come out of their homes, don't talk to anyone for scoring 80% and above. And few weak minds take extreme steps! First of all the parents and teachers mindsets need to change!!
