Grace Gives Us the Power to Heal

Grace Gives Us the Power to Heal

Today's Mother's Day is the first I will celebrate without my Mother who died last October at age 92. Martha Watt Baldoni was an excellent example to me. She served as Mayor of Perrysburg, Ohio and long-time member of city council. Her passion for social justice and ecumenicalism shaped her life. Mother was a true communitarian who sought to bring people of difference together. We miss our Mother but we treasure her example of grace -- something she shared with one and all.

Wither Grace?

We live in contentious times.

Grace has never been more necessary.

The elements of Grace are that it facilitates connectedness. It facilitates doing good.

Grace, by its nature, is given without strings attached.

At the same time, Grace involves mercy and forgiveness. We show mercy toward those who are against us...

And we also forgive those who wronged us.

Grace does not preclude accountability.

It demands it.

Because Grace is that power for good.

And if we are going to heal, there must be a degree of acknowledgment of our wrongdoings, and resolving to do better.

Grace is necessary if we’re going to move forward.

It is necessary for forgiveness.

It is necessary for mercy.

But again, it can reinforce accountability.

Why?

Because Grace has that extraordinary power that enables us to acknowledge our shortcomings.

We can forgive ourselves.

Grace is kind of a mysterious connectedness that we can all share with one another.

And, at the same time, it can be a force that facilitates good.

Prayers are always with you and the family John, 92 as the age may seem, but there is never a right time /age to bid goodbye to our loved ones, especially parents.
