GQ (Gentleman's Quarterly) Addresses Maternal Mortality in US
GQ magazine, a longstanding magazine, that focuses on all things male has published an article by Luke Darby that recognizes women in the US and especially, black women have the highest risk of dying during pregnancy and childbirth in the developing world. Albeit the US is the richest country in the world has not had any impact in reducing the number of women dying. Sadly, the rates have gone up over the past 20 years. Life for Mothers (LfM) appreciates that there are myriad causes which have contributed to these deaths, e.g., poverty, stigma, gender inequality, education, diminished access to health care services and lack of contraception options. More significantly, without political will and male partner involvement, there can be little change. By engaging and educating men to join the battle and advocate for women, sends a very powerful message to people and institutions. Lastly, the issue of implicit bias cannot be overlooked. This prejudice is rife throughout all segments of our society and has deadly consequences when it manifests within the health care system. LfM applauds GQ for making their predominately male readers aware of this very serious health problem. As a trained Sexual Health Educator and Preconception Peer Educator, I often educate people on social determinants of health and the importance of not just dismissing certain issues as a 'women's issue' or a 'minority issue'. I love that this article was targeted towards male viewers!!?

5 年Very sad commentary, considering points made below, and also considering the long history of analyses, proposals and half responses to the need for funding care for women and their babies in the US.? 5 年For years the U.S. has one of the lowest baby mortality rates and it’s shameful. The U.S. ranks with countries that have some of the lowest GNP. Now, that it has made headline in GQ it is something to talk/read about. All you really needed to do is read the CDC and Public Health Internet websites to find out how long this has been going on. The question is what are we going to do about it?
