Remember the film "Her" where Joaquin Phoenix’s character falls in love with an AI named Samantha? It’s a moving exploration of love and tech that feels more relevant today than ever.

While we're not quite there yet, OpenAI's ChatGPT-4o brings us closer to what once seemed like pure sci-fi.

From Sci-Fi to Reality: The Evolution of AI

In "Her", Joaquin Phoenix’s character develops a relationship with Samantha, an AI that can think, feel, and evolve.

Fast-forward to today, and we have ChatGPT-4o, an AI designed to handle complex conversations and tasks without emotional baggage easily.

But how close are we really to the world portrayed in "Her"?

Let’s dive in.

Samantha vs. ChatGPT-4o (omni)

In "Her," Samantha is not just a voice assistant; she’s a digital companion who understands and evolves with Theodore, her human counterpart.

From managing his emails to sharing heartfelt conversations, Samantha seems to blur the lines between human and machine.

?? Similarities That Surprise

• Chat Skills: Like Samantha, ChatGPT-4o can hold conversations that may make you forget you're talking to a machine. It’s designed to understand context and respond in a way that makes chatting with a machine seem like talking to a friend.
• Beyond Basic Tasks: Both AIs can manage schedules, sort emails, and more. But ChatGPT-4o does it without pretending to feel joy, sadness, or frustration.
• Learning from Data: While Samantha evolves through emotional experiences, ChatGPT-4o improves its responses over time by learning from vast amounts of data and user interactions.

?? But They're Not Quite the Same

• Emotional Depth Unlike Samantha, ChatGPT-4o doesn’t feel. Its emotional responses are simulations crafted through algorithms that predict what a human might say in a given situation.
• Personal Growth Samantha’s ability to grow and evolve personally goes beyond the current scope of ChatGPT-4o, which resets after each interaction without retaining any personal growth or memories (yet). Still, OpenAI has already released ChatGPT Memory in some parts of the world (not in Germany, unfortunately).
• Building Relationships Samantha makes genuine connections. ChatGPT-4o helps you connect with information and people more efficiently.

??Fiction and Reality

While "Her" presents a future where humans and AI coexist through deep emotional bonds, the reality with ChatGPT-4o, even though impressive, remains in practicality. We have yet to see an AI that can experience personal growth or emotions.
