The GPL Inspects DID Education Projects @ Ekurhuleni

Yesterday, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature’s (GPL), Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development and Property Management conducted oversight visits at the Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) education projects inclusive of Barcelona, Lakeside and Mogobeng Primary Schools situated at Ekurhuleni. Team DID’s Chief Director: Education Infrastructure, Nape Monakedi and Project Manager, Richard Tshabalala accompanied the Portfolio Committee and provided a detailed presentation on the overall status of these projects.
The site visits commenced at Barcelona Primary School. The project is currently at site establishment stage set for a modern information technology-based learning facility. The scope of work consists of the demolition and construction of a new school, new administration block, 44 classrooms to cater for Grade R-7 learners, library and media centre, multipurpose room, art and culture room, technology centre, music centre, dance studies room and visual art room. The facility also includes sports and recreation area, laboratory, computer room, dining hall, nutrition centre guard house and external works. The Portfolio Committee urged stakeholders to work in harmony to ensure that the construction of the school is delivered on time.
The second site visit was at Lakeside Primary School, where the project scope focuses on the rehabilitation and refurbishment of existing structures. The project scope of works includes refurbishment of all classroom blocks, ablution blocks and administration block. The DID appointed a new contractor following the termination of the previous contractor due to poor performance.
Lastly, the Portfolio Committee visited Mogobeng Primary School where the DID is refurbishing and building additional classrooms and an ICT classroom. The Portfolio Committee commended the DID for progress made following the appointment of a new contractor.
The oversight visits underscored the Portfolio Committee’s commitment to ensure quality infrastructure development in schools across Gauteng. The Committee emphasised the importance of completing projects on time and adherence to safety and quality standards to ensure that learners and educators benefit from improved school facilities.
