GPL Inspects DID Education Projects in Soweto

Today, the Gauteng Provincial Legislature (GPL), Portfolio Committee on Infrastructure Development and Property Management met with Team DID Project Managers as well as appointed Contractors to assess project progress at Nancefield and Noordgesis Primary School as well as Thubelihle Intermediate School in Soweto. The Department of Infrastructure Development (DID) was represented by the DDG for Education and STARS, Mmakwena Selepe.

Nancefield Primary School is currently 50% complete, a new contractor was appointed this year. The scope of the project includes the demolition of the existing structure and construction of a new facility, an administration block, sports facility, guardhouse, nutrition center, library, multipurpose center, laboratory, and two combi courts, along with mechanical and electrical installations. The school is expected to be completed by September 2025.

The next stop was at Thubelihle where the school is undergoing refurbishments and renovations for classrooms and toilets as well as replacements of roof and ceiling. This project has experienced challenges that led to the delay in the appointment of a new contractor. The school project is estimated to be complected by the end of this financial year.

Lastly, the GPL inspected Noordgesig Primary School. This R114 million investment project is set to replace the old asbestos school. Noordgesig Primary School has 49 classrooms, two science laboratories, media center, library, nutrition center, school hall, an admin block and separate section for Grade R leaners with a play area.

The DID provided a detailed account of all the project challenges and answered questions posed by the GPL and stakeholders.
