Mandatory Use of National ID for Banking Services
Starting from Magh 1, 2080 (January 14, 2024), the Government of Nepal has enforced the mandatory use of the National Identity Card (NID) for banking and financial services. This decision was officially published in the Nepal Gazette on Ashadh 10, 2081 (???? ???? ?? ??? ???????? ????? ????? ???????). In line with this, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) has directed all banks and financial institutions to open bank accounts strictly based on the National ID number.
? Banks and financial institutions must ensure that customers use their National ID number for opening bank accounts.
? To ease access, the National Identity Card and Registration Department has facilitated the distribution of National ID numbers through all District Administration Offices (DAOs).
? In Kathmandu, additional service camps have been set up at the District Administration Office to provide National ID numbers efficiently.
? Citizens can check their National ID number and application status through the Citizen Portal: Citizen Portal - Check National ID Number
? Banks and financial institutions have been instructed to assist customers in verifying their National ID numbers during account opening.

Current National ID Enrollment Status:
? As of now, 16.5 million Nepali citizens have received their National ID number, however, the number of citizens who have received the physical card remains lower.
? Citizens can still open bank accounts using just the National ID number, even without the physical card.
Eligibility for National ID:
? All Nepali citizens aged 16 and above with a citizenship certificate are eligible to apply.
? As per the National Identity Card and Registration Act, 2076, minors without citizenship can also obtain a Minor National ID through a defined process.
With this policy into implementation the Government of Nepal aims to enhance banking security, reducing identity fraud risk, and strengthening Nepal’s digital identity framework, supporting digital governance and aligning digital transformation strategy.
