On Monday, June 4th, the current Governor of Puerto Rico, Ricardo Rossello, will be in Tampa, Florida supporting the political candidacy of Democratic Senator Bill Nelson. How would this event be in the best interests of Puerto Rico and its people? Presently, Puerto Rico is highly dependent on a Republican-controlled Congress and Presidency, and the preponderance of support for the island has came from Republican administrators and legislators, such as Senator Marco Rubio.
Senator Nelson, a lackadaisical member of Congress for the last 18 years, will be challenged, among others, by the highly popular and effective Governor of Florida Rick Scott. Unquestionably, Scott will receive considerable support from Hispanic voters in Florida, from Puerto Rican voters in particular, because of his strong support for the island and its people since hurricane Maria. With this political backdrop, the Governor of Puerto Rico should not be playing partisan politics; He should be straddling the political line, looking to gain further support from the current administration and both sides of the aisle in Congress. Governor Rossello is not playing his cards right, to the detriment of Puerto Rico and its people.
