The Governor

One of the key things I learned from my time with Tony Robbins was, "change is inevitable; progress is not." Last week was not only a week for change but significant progress.?Not only on the personal and business fronts but also in my preparation to go back into the Hudson River on August 7 for the Seal Swim.?For the first time, I swam five consecutive days; I also swam with my swim buddy and "wingman" Suzanne and then with Coach Patty for 2.5 miles in open water.?It was a week where my wingman said I was moving from "Superman to Aquaman." Significant progress in pursuing the mission to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11 and those seals lost during Extortion 17.?As I finished the business week on Friday late afternoon, I had one more interaction crystallizing why I do what I do.

Earlier in the week, I wished a friend who interviewed me shortly after the Miracle on the Hudson a happy birthday.?She is currently stationed in France, so when she didn't respond, I assumed that she might not have seen it with the time zone difference and state of the news cycle.?But on Friday afternoon, I received a message from her, and we started to interact via messenger.?

I hadn't interacted with her for over five years.?We compared notes about COVID in France and North Carolina, and then she asked me how I was doing.?I shared my new talk, Turmoil to Triumph, and the swim I am training for with the Navy Seals.??

When she first interviewed me, I was going through that rollercoaster I wrote about a couple of weeks ago about being affected but not crushed.?I shared with her how I started to organize the turmoil of that time into a personal triumph, humbling myself which sustained hope for the future, which helped me heal. But the real change was when I realized that the governor is the key to take that triumph to a victory.

She immediately asked me how a governor can have that kind of impact.?I told her I wasn't speaking about a political governor; I was talking about a governor on a motor vehicle.?The governor in a car doesn't let the car go over a certain speed.?The governor is like self-discipline.??Self-discipline keeps you on track and making consistent progress.?

I shared with her what I did, talk about and now show people how I turned that turmoil into triumph.?After the healing, it started with a focus on self-discipline.?That time in my life was so chaotic that I was all over the place and not doing anything very well.?One day I found a note I wrote from something I learned from Tony in my credenza that changed the direction I was taking.

Willpower + reason = self discipline.?

Willpower starts by being conscious of the mission at hand.??Reason brings the infinite intelligence of the mission and plan in view, the why.?I learned from Tony that the subconscious mind links the conscious willpower and the intelligence of reason to give you the self-discipline to accomplish anything you desire.

And that is how I started to organize my turmoil to triumph into small victories after the Miracle on the Hudson and after, and it is the same strategy I am using to make progress to be able to participate and complete the swim with the Navy Seals on August 7th.?

At the end of this interaction with her, she asked me to keep her updated on my progress on my upcoming swim. She shared with me that she had been going through her own turmoil, being overseas away from her family during this COVID situation, and she thanked me again for remembering her birthday.?

One thing I learned during the past fifteen months of COVID is everybody is hurting about something.??When I made all those calls, almost everyone shared with me something they were struggling with.?This is why it is important to stay in contact with not only those with whom you are close but those with whom you may have only had a short acquaintance.?You never know how you can impact someone’s life.

?Humbleness + hope = healing

Willpower + reason = self discipline

Healing + self-discipline = turning turmoil into triumph

With all the challenges 2020 presented, a strategy to turn that year of turmoil into 2021 being a year of triumph is to humble yourself, get around people who can help and support you.?Have the self-discipline to focus on your major goals and ask your team to hold you to account.?You will grow out of the turmoil you had in 2020 and on the road to a triumphant 2021,

I went into the waters of the Hudson River on January 15, and when I came out, I had a new purpose in my life.?My aim is to help people become the best they can be. To overcome any turmoil they have experienced in life and turn it into a triumph. To do something for someone who cannot ever repay me.

On August 7, 2021, I'll be going back into the Hudson River, but much like that cold day in January, I won't be alone.?

I've been invited to join some of America's greatest, a group of Navy Seals to commemorate the 20th anniversary of 9/11 and remember the Seal mission Extortion 17.?

It's one thing to swim on your own; it's another to swim with the Navy Seals.?

Remember the value of association.?One way to grow out of the turmoil that 2020 presented is to associate yourself with a group of five that will hold you to a standard and doing something for someone who cannot do anything for you. Like we will be doing on August 7, raising money for the GIGO Fund, helping the homeless and down on their luck veterans who continue to struggle after leaving the service and especially while we recover from COVID 19.?

My mission is simple; help those who may be going through their own turmoil from the past year with a pathway to victory and triumph and understand that you didn't get this far only to go this far!

Treat the TURMOIL of 2020 as your year of preparation and 2021 as your year to TRIUMPH!
