Government Legal Profession Moot
Government Legal Department
We help the government to govern well, within the rule of law.
Junior government lawyers recently had the opportunity to appear in the UKSupremeCourt as part of the Government Legal Profession’s Moot competition.
They were put them in charge of a fictional case about a new government strategy for regulating social media and the nature of the consultation exercise that accompanied it.
A moot court is simply the holding of a fictional case in a court room, simulating the motions that legal teams go through in real life hearings. The moot offers excellent training in public law and advocacy by testing participants on their ability to make concise and persuasive legal arguments in a simulated courtroom setting. This is just a small part of the brilliant training opportunities on offer to government lawyers throughout their careers.
The competition saw 10 teams progress through the written submissions stage to two rounds of oral arguments.

The final was held in-front of GLD's Permanent Secretary and Treasury Solicitor Susanna McGibbon, First Treasury Counsel Sir James Eadie KC, Richard Honey KC, Claire Palmer and Andrew Scott. Congratulations to the winning team, Olivia Roffey and Amy Freeman; to the second place team, Georgia Appiah Frimpong and Jacob McNair; and to the best advocate, Olivia Roffey.
Olivia and Amy reflect: “Such a great idea for junior lawyers to get some proper advocacy experience, increase our exposure and networks across GLP, and step outside of our comfort zones! We had a great time throughout the competition, culminating in a fantastic day on Friday, so a big thank you from us to all of those who organised and participated in the first ever GLP Moot!”
Susanna McGibbon commented “I was thrilled to be on the judging panel for the inaugural GLP Moot and very much look forward to it becoming a fixture of the GLP calendar. The calibre of the competitors was fantastic, and it was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate the advocacy skills of our junior lawyers. Many congratulations to Olivia and Amy, and my thanks to the organisers for such a well-run event.”
