Government Jobs in India

Government Jobs in India

Was watching a prime time programs of Ravish Kumar on Youtube.com. Came across an episode on related to jobs and contribution of different sector in creating employment in India. And surprised to see a data that only 6% of Indians are employed in government sector and more or less 15% individuals employed under organized private sector job. I did my research and make a note. Please go through it.

In Financial Year 2011-12 there were 17.61 million (1 crore 76 lakhs) government employees in India. As per a report by World Bank, in 2014, India’s labor force size was 496 million.

So, approximately 4% of the work force worked for government in 2014 (17.61/496). It is also interesting to see the percentage of formal private sector jobs (also called organized sector).

Formal sector is defined as enterprises employing more than 10 workers. These firms come under the purview of labor laws, register for paying tax, their employee pay and benefits tend to be better and the employees get a written job contract (hence more job security) ;).

As per the report, in Financial Year 2011-12 there were approximately 12.04 million (1 crore 20 lakh) formal private sector jobs.

So, approximately 2.43% of the work forces are in formal private sector.

Hence, the size of the formal sector, based on RBI data till 2012, is just above 6.4% (government + private sector).

The rest 93.6% are in the informal sector. Majority are farmers, farm laborers and daily wage workers. I saw an estimate that about 400 million workers are in this category.

I believe the number of people working for government hasn’t changed much since 2012 as number of public sector jobs have shrunk for a while (see the RBI page below). Most probably it has fallen a little since.

Approximately 40 lakhs individuals are working under central government.

50 lakhs individuals are working in PSU's (central and state combined).
