Government Issues High Severity Warning for Google Chrome Users

The Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) has issued a high-severity warning for Google Chrome users, advising them to update their browsers to the latest version as soon as possible. The warning pertains to multiple vulnerabilities found in the browser, which hackers could exploit to execute arbitrary code and gain access to sensitive information on the targeted system.

This could lead to a variety of malicious actions, such as data theft, identity theft, or disruption of operations.

CERT-In has urged all Google Chrome users to take the following steps to mitigate the risk of exploitation:

  • Update Chrome to the latest version (106.0.5249.62)
  • Enable automatic updates for Chrome
  • Use a strong password manager to generate and store unique passwords for all of your online accounts
  • Be careful about what links you click on and what attachments you open
  • Enable two-factor authentication (2FA) for all of your online accounts whenever possible

If you are concerned that your computer may have been infected, you should run a malware scan using a reputable antivirus program.

High-severity warnings are issued for vulnerabilities that are considered to be very dangerous and could be exploited by attackers to cause significant damage. Therefore, it is vital to take the warning seriously and update Chrome to the latest version as soon as possible.

In addition to CERT-In's recommended steps, organizations should educate their employees about cybersecurity best practices and implement appropriate security controls to protect their systems and data.
