Government Invests in Improved Roadside Facilities for HGV Drivers

The government has recently announced an investment of ￡19 million to upgrade 39 roadside facilities across England, as part of efforts to recruit and retain professional HGV drivers. This includes ￡8 million in direct funding, plus a further ￡11 million from industry.

For drivers, this will mean increased parking capacity, enhanced security, and improved amenities like showers, rest areas, and restaurants at key sites along major routes. Too often, drivers are forced to take breaks in their cabs, without access to basic necessities. This investment aims to address that deficiency, providing proper facilities for the well-deserved rest periods of hardworking drivers who keep our supply chains running.

The funding comes through the Government's HGV Parking and Driver Welfare Grant Scheme, part of a broader ￡100 million investment in the logistics sector. With bidding now open for a second round of grants until 20 November, we expect further upgrades nationwide.

As industry leaders, we commend the government's efforts to invest in the welfare of professional HGV drivers. They play an indispensable role on the UK's roads, and should have access to parking, restrooms, and other essential amenities.

This marks an important step toward improving conditions for drivers. We hope it signals a long-term commitment to enhancing roadside facilities and recognising the critical contribution of drivers across the country. It is fantastic to see this investment being put in for HGV drivers, but this also highlights it has been a long time coming. Currently, the facilities we see are insufficient, putting strain on drivers across the UK. With this investment, It’s not just HGV drivers who stand to benefit, but rather the whole logistics industry as drivers will be better rested and prepared when they get back out on the road.

Lets hope these promises of long-term changes come to fruition.
