Goverment Corruption vs Tourism Destinations

Goverment Corruption vs Tourism Destinations

Nowadays we are hearing a lot about the companies that are devoted to sustainable and also responsible tourism, that`s very good for our future and also for the communities and their people everywhere they live and work in our planet "Earth".

Sustainable and responsible tourism concepts are not new but they did not changed anything in the last 2 or 3 decades, as the poor areas are still poor areas, the way it is organized does not really affect and do not solve the fundamental concept of the poorness and no one is willing to ask, why people and same communities are poor same or some times worst than before??

Sustainable tourism and responsible tourism concepts in 2016, seems to turn into a big JOKE, for those they are talking about that without considering the corruption threats in the destinations.

There are strong arguments as follow that shows us that Sustainable and responsible tourism practice have not changed and did not helped communities especially in the countries under development as much as were predicted in the last 3 decades due to corruption issues:

Corrupted Governments are against:

1- Education and Vocational training

2- Nature and environment

3- Health care system

4- Justice system

5- Voluntary practices

6- Safety and security on mobility

7- Institutions are weak and do not respect the constitutions and law infrastructure

and many more arguments could be added.

Today we have 2 lessons to learn from:

1- Brussels's and Paris had been hardly attacked by terrorism, their tourism industry too, but after e certain period they are fully recovered and are peaking up to the position they were before attacks.Paris and Brussels are still among the most visited Tourism Destinations of Europe, and the growth trend is positive. Here we see that the security institutions faced an aberration but after all has been placed in order, this means that the system is not affected by corruption and the institutions are independent from the politics and capable to see their weaknesses for the future.

2- North Africa countries and more

Those countries had been among most visited spots on the 2 last decades, luxury tourism almost all year around driven also by the culture and activities products, but today they are almost dead. No one is able to tell us if they will ever come back as a strong Tourism Destination like before. The central institutions of the above countries, were in deep disorganization, ruled by one-man show, he had the power to organize everything, all was organised in full autocratic governmental rules, corruption level very high and almost endemic organised by a pool of families that were close to the big boss. Today their political systems are still under strong disruption and the Governmental institutions are in-existent, the supposed democracy has been  a fake story on the last years.

The above  samples tell us that, in 2016 and after we have to choose in between:

Sustainable Tourism Destinations or Corrupted Countries

Corrupted countries can not be an sustainable tourism destination, a mix of them its not possible. On the last 30 years we have many bad example to refer and especially those where the big brands lost their investments next day and no one knows what will happen with them.

Its time to reorganize the Global Policy for "Sustainable and responsible tourism Destination" it has to change and to address the new global challenges and particularly the corruption issue.

"Corruption" is  considered a killing virus against Tourism Destinations and sustainable tourism.

Elvis, I hear your long and disillusioning experience with the region here talking. And you are right - by the UN Millenium Development Goals, sustainable development has four dimensions: economic development, social inclusion, environmental sustainability, and: good governance. Regarding individual countries, my experience is that "if you want to design the future, you must first leaf through the past". The Guardian wrote about the topic last September like this: https://www.theguardian.com/public-leaders-network/2015/sep/25/good-governance-sustainable-development-goals-united-nations At the end, it′s not the what but why you do something - the results speak for themselves. Let′s keep on stumbling into the right direction.

Certainly corruption and sustainability are not exactly "siblings", yet it can not be denied that tourism creates jobs also in autocratic governed countries. And also autocratic government have an interest in s long term perspective for tourism. Corruption doesn't just originate from those countries; like every medal has two sides that applies to corruption too. If it were not for the interest of a foreign investor looking for a super quick ROI there would one source of "additional income" less. So sometimes foreign investors take local authoraties hostage by playing the game of shifting investments to the unloved or even hatred neighbour if their demands got less restrictive planning and approval is met. So the still existing lack of compliance of the "haves" meets the hunger for power, glory and riches of the politicians and administrator in the destinations of the "have-nots". This is just a short excerpt of what I would have to say about this subject. But a last sentence: At least the tourism [visits by"Westeners"](together with today's media possibilities) encourage people to ask or fight for true democracy and justice.
