Got To Have You

Got To Have You

Remember You, Like You & Got to Have You Part 3 – Got To Have You ?

In our final part of the building relationships series, we discuss the 'it factor.' The first two parts are the easier steps to get a job in sports (or anywhere else). The last has always been the hardest. It's where people 'Got to have you'.

I see the' it factor in all the networking, meetings, and interviewing people over the years. I want to hire this person or work with this person. What is the 'it' factor? Are you and how you position yourself with your experience, personality, confidence, preparation, and skills of why people want to work with you? If you can position yourself where people want to work with you, you are at a 1% chance of getting your dream job.?

In my coaching and conversations, many of you ask me. Can you share an example of 'Got to Have You'? Here is a great story. I remember that during the pandemic, I met a young woman who was a current graduate student. She was getting an MBA with a specialty in international business; her undergraduate degree was in Chinese and management. She told me that she studied abroad in Shanghai during her undergraduate studies. She had multiple internships already, but she knew she wanted to get into corporate sponsorships. I had one question: I asked her her background, and she said her family is from Honduras. Then, I asked if she could understand, speak, and write Mandarin. She said yes. Finally, I asked her how many languages she understood, and she said four (English, Spanish, Mandarin & Cantonese). I was floored. Then I said, 'So if I brought you into a meeting with people who spoke any of those languages, you could not only interpret but understand.' She said, 'yes'.

From my perspective as an executive, this person was a secret weapon in any international meetings that could happen in Mainland China, Taiwan, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, Macau, and the Spanish-speaking world. I was blown away; this person can bring immense value to any sports team or business that wants to do business in that part of the world. I could think of 10 different NBA Teams that would 'Want to have her.' What happened? She got a job in sports and is a rising star.

Why does this matter??

From the example above, position yourself on how people ‘got to have you’ and not fear missing out (FOMO) by passing you up. Here are some ways people ‘got to have you:

  • Preparation:?Doing your homework on the company, understanding the role thoroughly, and being prepared to discuss how your skills and experiences align with the company's goals can make a significant difference.
  • Professionalism:?Demonstrating professionalism in every interaction related to the job search, including emails, phone calls, and interviews, is critical. This also includes punctuality, dressing appropriately for interviews, and following up with a thank you note. There are so many people who do not do this.
  • Communication Skills, Eye Contact & Confidence:?Being able to communicate effectively, both in writing and verbally, is a key skill that employers look for. This includes being clear, concise, and articulate in your interactions. Also, look at someone, do not look away when you are talking with them. Confidence in your abilities and in presenting yourself is key, but it's important to balance this with humility and openness to learning.
  • Unique Skills and Experience:?Having the skills and experience that match the job description is obviously important. However, being able to effectively highlight how your specific background makes you the best fit for the role can set you apart.
  • Enthusiasm and Passion:?Showing genuine enthusiasm for the role and the company can significantly impact your chances. Employers want to hire candidates who are passionate about what they do and are excited about contributing to the company's success.
  • Adaptability:?The ability to adapt to new situations, learn quickly, and be flexible is highly valued. Employers look for candidates who can thrive in a changing environment and take on new challenges.
  • Problem-Solving Skills:?A major plus is demonstrating that you can think critically and solve problems effectively. Employers value candidates who can approach challenges creatively and find solutions.

As always Dr Dan, your mind works in mysterious ways! I love the phrase “not just a candidate but a necessity.” That’s sums it up well.
